Reds Magical Mystery Tour

Kallang was turned into the Kop with over 40,000 fans cheering Liverpool on.

Done and dusted. Four days of mass hysteria and raging Red passion, Liverpool’s stay in Singapore is finally over. And the Reds fans must feel satiated. Or are they?
Eight years. That’s how long Singapore has waited for the Reds to make their grand appearance and this time round, fans were given long-awaited opportunities to meet the Reds up close and personal.
And how they lapped it up. From traveling to Velocity @ Novena for an autograph with Fernando Torres and Jamie Carragher, to meeting Javier Mascherano and Alvaro Arbeloa at Courts Megastore, Singapore fans made sure they were both seen and heard.
That wasn’t enough.
The following day, 4,000 scarf-waving fans lined up along the Singapore River on Saturday afternoon, decked in a sea of red Liverpool jerseys, just to catch a glimpse of their favourite players as they sailed past on a river cruise.
I have always dreamed of cheering on my Liverpool heroes at the club’s famous Anfield stadium on Merseyside. On Sunday night, that dream came close to reality when I joined a stunning sea of red at the National Stadium, cheering and singing lustily to Liverpool’s anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
Anfield had truly arrived in Singapore.

Andriy Voronin is awed by the huge fan support in Singapore
Rafa himself was impressed. He said after the match, “The tour has been a success, especially in terms of support. When you plan tours like this, it feels like a week is a long time to be away but when you see the faces of the fans, it makes it all worth it.”
Other stars were somewhat taken aback by the level of crazy support. ”It’s very nice to see so many supporters from Singapore. I know we have a lot of fans here, but I didn’t know we have so many. We really enjoyed our time here,” said Dirk Kuyt, who earlier helped Fernando Torres score his first pre-season goal.
Midfielder Yossi Benayoun was equally impressed.
It didn’t end there. After the match, die-hards hopped into their vehicles and trailed the team bus all the way to the airport, hoping to catch a last glimpse of the Reds before they left Singapore soil.
This leaves me to wonder.
What makes a Reds fan tick, that makes one so attached to a club so distant and far away, that makes one scream himself hoarse at the sight of a Torres or Alonso, or is left in a blubbering mess after a simple autograph or picture? It’s not just a Reds fan. It could be a Kobe Bryant fan (more than 8,000 of you were at the Indoor Stadium last Tuesday… or even the Man U fans who traveled up to KL).

We’re looking forward to some great stories! To kick things off first, check out our pictures below.

Liverpool coach Rafa Benitez looked tense during the match, hoping to mastermind their first pre-season victory.

Ryan Babel and Glenn Johnson take some time to smile at our Yahoo! photographer.

Liverpool posing with the challenge trophy after thumping Singapore 5-0.

I went over to the Liverpool dressing room to see if the players were still around.

Reds keeper Pepe Reina, with Yahoo! Singapore Country Editor Jeff Oon and I. He added that the fans support was incredible.

Coach Rafa Benitez must be buzzing the Liverpool owners to book a date for the Reds to tour Singapore again.

Liverpool defender Insua took this picture with me after the game, and he is looking forward to the season opener against Spurs.

Liverpool fans are hoping for a successful season.

I’m happy that Liverpool did not take their Singapore fans for a ride. From what I’ve seen, the players were all very friendly and obliging with taking photographs and giving autographs.
Anyway, nice comprehensive coverage of the Reds Tour! Hope to see more of these articles in future!
man now i feel so sad that they are leaving. i was at the match and training session and the atmosphere was crazy. too bad Gerrard wasnt here. but it was still the best experience of my life. i hope they will come again in the near future. THIS IS ANFIELD.
I do find it ammusing seeing so many hero worshippers of Liverpool out here. I’ve been watching football in the UK for around 40 years and I like so many friends back home are really sick and tired of the game we onced loved that has been destroyed by the ‘money men’ and players who really are mainly motivated by how much they can earn…don’t ‘love’ them they don’t love you….they are only in it for themselves…watch the crowd plummet next season, as the recession bites harder in the UK.
Waited a long time for the KOP experience. Sang my heart out and shouted my lungs out. Thanks for a wonderful display and visit. YNWA! Hope the fan club or the Proftiable Grp puts up a website with all the great pool pics. the huge fan followings wherever Pool team was. We want to remember this memorable visit !
Liverpool fans globally support the club and we wish the team will honour the club , staffs & fun by bringing the Premiership and Champion League trophies back to Anfield of Mersyside.
Best wishes from Singapore.
They came… they saw…. they conquered.
I started to support LIVERPOOL when Kevin Keegan was the idol at Anfield. Even after he left for Hamburg SV, LIVERPOOL is the only football that I supported. Next comes King Kenny and he truly surpassed whatever Keegan had achived at Liverpool. Too sad there’s little “exposure” of the King to the fans of Liverpool here, especially those youngster who had just started to LOVE LIVERPOOL FC.
I was at Kallang on Sunday and I was astonished at the numbers thee and the level of support Liverpool had….. However, I doubt that I was the only one who was disappointed at a) The chaos with parking cars b) The fact that there seemed to be only one bar open in the grandstand to get a beer hence a 100 person queue just to get a drink – particularly poor when water was taken from people going in to the stadium!
When I arrived I realised that my numbered S$188 ticket was not for a specific seat but just was in fact just a serial number. So I ended up sitting near the corner flag despite having a premium granstand ticket…. Simply wrong in my humble view.
I also feel let down that Gerrard wasn’t playing. The date of his court case was announced in early April and the tour annonced at least a week later so why use his photo in the publicity material?
Anyway, it was an experience but an expensive one to watch what amounts to a practice match.
Sincerely yours
‘Disappointed’
Liverpool, the most successful team of the last century in England. 18 English Champion, 5 European Cup Champion. Kenny Dalglish is back to propell Liverpool to the EPL title. Long Live liverpool !!!!!!!!!!
It was nice to have them here, but I’m quite disappointed because they were really far from the stand. I couldnt catch their faces clearly. *sad
Who the hell is LiverPool? Is this a foot ball team? or some kind of jokers?
I was there 8yr ago.. this year was Better…
But the Suppose to be KOP end.. did not receive much attention.. even for the Liverpool Players.. i think those below the VIP seats Tickets holder were treated to a much closer views of the whole team..
I think it badly organise… for the $15 worth of printed scraf..
Quite Disappointed! To queue to KOP stand tickets.. to Queue for Entrance.. yet much much further from the team~!
Beside that.. for the Drinks store.. its was sold out at half time!! i wonder if those under 18yo KIDs would have nothing to drink Beside beer… Can see a few Underage kids drinking..! Were they force to break the LAW?
HAPPY LFC fan.. but disappointed by the organising community!
Was surprised at how affectionate the liverpool fans were at the Kallang Stadium! Are we in Anfield or Kallang Stadium watching the game? lol! Credit to the SG Lions. They put on a good fight but lost to the better team. This shows how much we (soccer) are lagging behind. But nevertheless, Sunday was a night that showed the result after a long and heavy investment on our very own turf. Cheers.
I believe if Man u come,it will be the same. ManU = Liverpool= 18 league title. Everything the same, fans also,Same support. So liverpool cannot say they have the best fan in the world.
LIVERPOOL SUCKS!!!!!! LONG LIVE MAN UUUUUU
Is hard to explain why we love pool so much..the tradition..the players..anfield..the songs..the city…kop..so many..
liverpool produced great comebacks in sports and this inspired so many of us out there..
we know the fans in liverpool support the team to bits..here we try to be the same..although we are so far away..kop spirits never die..
i doubt you’ll see sucn support for a foreign team in a faraway country..this is the amazing thing abt sports..it brings ppl together..we feel so connected..
ask around now how many kids wish to visit anfield..
What can i say? Having supported the team since 1979, i was up close and personal with them!
Thanks for the company whom i work with which provided the full live coverage of tv broadcast and i just standing with my cameraman next to the field for the full match watching them play in front of my eyes.
Guess what, Dirk Kuyt put down his autograph on the back of my shirt i wore that day.
Hey Guys,
8years ago i was there as well with my pal, this year both of us went again.
It was awesome having thousands of liverpool supporters wearing the same crest. The fans were great, nothing short of the word fanstatic. Given a chance i hope we can be at the grand stand as the KOP area is really far away.. with my limited means of zooming in and out i can only make my own assumptions on the players identity.
Minus Points,
1) Bad drinks servers (only 2 booths), double standards for security checks. i have seen fans having MACdonalds, chicken rice, home made barley,
2) Liverpool din greet us, i just hope for a team to greet instead.
3) Poor Emcee (Hosts), not too engaging and the singing was really dis-organised.
4) Loop holes – After granting entry, with the same tickets, you’re able to get back to the stadium. That means if i purchased 5 tickets, and granted entry i able to get 4 new comers with 4 purchased tickets as long as the earlier 4s remained at their seats.
Plus Points,
1) FANS and Supporters are my reason for purchasing a ticket of $88/-
2) Stup#d MAN U supporters wearing Red Devil Jersey. Ain’t they trying to create some form of publicity or just trying their luck. Kidding/ Anyway, we had fun with hundreds of fans cursing and swearing at him.
3) Nice Scarf as Free gift could be thicker i guess.
Anyway, i enjoyed myself so much so i had goose bumps while singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’..
Pls come again.. Liverpool my only team.
Hey! Ion,
I like the title of your article “Reds Magical Mystery Tour”…
You must be a Beatle fan……quite refreshing.
Cheers!
its nothing new, why make such a huge fuss over it? U fan of liverpool. but are they are fan of you?
I went to Bt Jalil and it certainly reinforce that man utd are the number one team in SEA with 80,000 in attendance.
Glory Glory Man Utd
Singapore’s team low quality did the reds a big favour. Felt so ashamed when we were trashed. Sigh…………….
man u was great
Singapore Team listen! Aren;t u not affected by the adulation poured on another team that plays good football. We would support you all the way but for how long!!!10- 20 yrs!!!
When the last time Liverpool won the League????
Maybe they should join the S-League..and Win the Treble…
No qualms with the liverpool fans, but really hate it when these teams come and whack us left and right. Malaysia and the Thais got respectable results againts the EPL champ. Deep down, are you not affected by the state of our football. What are the organisers thinking. They could have whacked us ten nil man! Gladiator- Are you all entertained?
As usual, Man U fans are always jealous of the Liverpool support. Be a sport. But there is no need to explain our strong passion for Liverpool, just because Man U fans don’t have it, and they will never get it.
Liverpool Forever!!!!!!
i was at the stadium with my wife and kids on sunday,i can say its quite an exciting to see so many liverpool fans and supported for a ticket price of $88/- each and the marketing for this match is dame huge, its remind me of Malaysia Cup. i just wonder,is this kind atmosphere, media and marketing got happen again on Asean Cup game (former Tiger Cup)if tickets goes to $15/- each, frankly speaking im there cuz i want see how our own Lions give a fight to such big team like liverpool and they do job well done i can say,its just that they need more of this kind game every 6 mth,i guess so.Basically there is something all of us can look forward for better game and better player on our side.just my 2cent opinon!
Ole..Ole..Ole..Singapore!!!
I LOVE LFC since i was a child, the 8 jessrey number always i love to see.my wish is to win the cup. you will never walk alone!!!!.
i dont like liverpool…
i chelsea fan crazy….liverpool get lost,go to hell!!!
this year,chelsea win EPL,CHAMP LEAGUE,FA CUP,CARLING CUP….
i think all la…
GO GO CHELSEA!!! CHELSEA CHELSEA,LRAFA GET LOST!!!
TORRES GO TO HELL!!
These yellow skinned Singaporean worshippers of white men from England probabaly feel inferior and so they hero worshipped the white Liverpool players while booing their own Singaporean national players. What stupid idiots they are !!!!! I am laughing to myself how stupid these Singaporean people are and how lack of pride they have in their own country and national team.
If there is a war between England and Singapore,I won’t be surprised if the Singaporeans will turn their guns against each other and join us to fight against their own country and to kill and slaughter their own country men.No wonder the white people of England even with just a small population manage to conquer and take over so much of the world with much larger population.
I never seen such idiotic and disloyal people in the world. These Singaporeans do not seem to have any pride or loyalty to their own country.I am not impressed but think these yellow skinned Singaporean people are just the running dogs of us whites.
Whites will continue to divide and rule the yellow people and other coloured people because the yellow people will always hero worship us whites
Hahahahahahhahhahhahahha
Alright…the event was so successful.the stadium atmosphere was excellent.I even thought for a moment that Singapore team was playing an away game.I know people support Liverpool but why not support their own national team?Liveppol attack toying with the sinpore defence and You people at the stadium still can cheer…What a shame.
it’s a disgrace! i’m sure not even one is there to support our national team. where were you guys when the lions play their heart and soul for the recent qualifiers. and to say that kallang was anfield on sun, for goodness sake it’s the lion’s den! hello! all the hype is abt liverpool, blabla…spare a thought for the lions. nobody even mention about them. how would you feel if you’re one of them?
Everyone has their own support for their own club … but for me, it is Liverpool since 1978.
Having been to Anfield, Bangkok and Hong Kong to watch Liverpool live matches, and now is Singapore (twice 2001 and now), it is truly amazing how we duplicate the atmosphere here (it is fantastic, just like all the Reds fans worldwide). I can sense the jealousy from other clubs fans just because their club did not drop by Singapore this time (so near and yet so far, and some no way near at all).
The Reds didn’t disappoint us in this game, and hope they carry on the same spirit in wrestling the EPL title from our bitter rival.
Cheers, all Reds fans, and indeed this is the day, and forever, You’ll Never Walk Alone.
I liv liverpool, was at national stadium and i am proud of the fans and the whole team performance.
You will never walk alone!!
liverpool is visitor, comes here once in a blue moon, for sure will be discussing about this team… lion team you can see most of the time here. perhaps you should set up another blog to talk about the lion seperately if you’re free…
Great to see them come all the way to our stadium and played friendly match.
Singapore a long way to match them. some of our players are quite rough as all can see in the match.
We may need the kind of spirit in our team, a good lesson learned for all.
Team captain may want to see how we can play with such a huge support like the kallang rowing.
We need crowd support and good players, so start to train them in schools, coach them well with great coaches and we may be on our way to play like the liverpool…
Cheers…
The Singaporeans at the National Stadium last Sunday are a disgraceful lot . They can’t tell the difference between adoring a Foreign Club and National Loyalty & Pride . By all means , admire and adore your Club BUT not at the expense of booing your own Country or extending cursory support for your Country while concurrently being fanatical about the Country’s oppostion on the field . They are idiotic as one other commentary said . Deep in , many neutrals must be laughing their socks off , perhaps even the Club people as well .
The event was great atmosphere was great.. The crowd that was not supporting their own country, UTTERLY DISGRACEFUL! What happened to the home pride? As a fan, i can understand your excitement over the players.. But when they are in your own country and your own national team is playing against them , as a Singaporean where has all the pride and honour gone? this was so disappointing. 2 years ago i was at the national Stadium watching the Singapore Rugby 7s. Singapore vs my Fav NZ team All Blacks. I’m sure most pple there were All blacks fans. BUT when NZ scored try after try, the stadium wat pitch quiet . you could hear a pin drop. And when Sg scored their one and only try, You could see the stadium come alive. Thats wat i’m talking bout.. HOME PRIDE. You red mutts sure have alot to think about. Go live somewhere else, apparantly u never walk alone eh? Go take a hike losers.
Who said Singaporeans don’t support the national team? you must have forgotten huge finals like the tiger cup final against indonesia, i think its the year 2005.
come on the entire stadium was jam packed with Lion’s fans then, with just a small 5% being the indonesia supports. THAT was a real sell out. the atmosphere was so brilliant, i would’nt have forgotten that night. cheers and songs on going never-ending. Honestly, i thought the stadium on 26th july was much quieter compared to that tiger cup final, but still, a nice atmosphere nonetheless.
It just goes to show how much we love our nation and will unite in a common voice against other footballing nations, especially those rivals in southeast asia.
The reason why there was overwhelming support for Liverpool, well people like me paid to go and see our heroes from Anfield! Of course for that occasion, we appreciate liverpool more than our national team. how many people are fortunate enough to go europe to see them in skin? you need to account for air ticket, lodging, food etc. you do the math. IT COSTS A BOMB. so its a real treat that they are here in our homeland, so the passionate support for the team in red, its understandable.
we simply appreciate the better football liverpool played. and everybody love to see goals. liverpool had far more chances.
And who said we didnt show the Lions our appreciation. whenever the lions got near through the defense of liverpool, we fans got equally excited i remembered. when substitutions are made by the Singapore team, we did cheer for them, especially the more famous and well-liked players. Just that, of course, liverpool got much of the attention.
And to that fellow who really think we will support england when theres a war between Singapore and England ————
COME ON RASCIST!
(in my most polite respond)
dont be stupid
and dont forget, singapore was once your colony. “The impregnable fotress” as you people call it?
WHAT A JOKE. check your history textbooks. a real stupid strategy which was easily overpowered by the japs. conquer the yellows? try to get a revenge upon the japs before you want to divide and conquer us “Yellows” as you call it. They showed you how to fight a war properly, before the US taught them how to be nice.
And you “AWESOME” whites still need the US to intervene to help you to win WW2 in which your country was suppose to win? if its a 1 on 1, singapore will lose for sure when war comes. Come on we are so tiny. There isnt a fight. but if its a one-on-one in terms of critical reasoning skills, i am sure many of us will make you whites feel shameful.
come on. use some critical reasoning to understand why liverpool had much of the attention on 26th july.
you are smart. its that simple. think again and give us that correct answer will yeah? Smart white?
LOL.
Liverpool is a great team!!!! only without LUCAS!!!!!Pls sell him!!!
Eng Huat
RASCIST, think you must be a real giant stupid guy in Singapore
before you can said “these stupid Singaporean peolpe”.
This is only a sport.
Bull Daryl . We are talking about what happened last Sunday ! True blue shameful Idiotic Lot . Go live in Anfield , so that we here can truly walk alone .
The crowd at the stadium on Sunday was just a tiny glimpse, and possibly a small fraction of the total number of Liverpool fan base in Sg. I’m 1 of those who (dreadfully) was entangled with personal commitment, and wasn’t able to sweat it out (and scream my lungs out) like the rest of the fans present at the stadium.
Nevertheless, the 5-0 result made our “united nations” Lions look like sea-lions, as opposed to the 1-1 result in Thailand proved, a very valuable lesson that FAS needs to study hard in retrospect. Leaves us to wonder how devastating the score-line would’ve been had Stevie “Wonder” Gerrard joined the line up, if not for his legal suit.
I’m very pleased that Rafa did not leave us out of the Asian Tour, I’m confident the turn up for all their autograph sessions & at the stadium has certainly made news in Merseyside. Surely they must be very encouraged & pleased to know that they’ll never walk alone (even in this tiny corner of the world). And I look forward to their return again soon.
Aiya…dun get so involved la…this team shooting at another team, than this person shooting at another comments. All games are RIGGED by the rich and powerful man behind. If not, where to get the $$$ to pay all this footballers. Really waste of time to watch soccer again.
Hi all,
I’m a Liverpool fan here (though I don’t know why others are writing in too!?). It’s been great to watch them play here & against our Lions.
I’m writing here not to show my support for my fav club Liverpool but to comment on my national team. Liverpool or any other visiting teams in a match titled ‘International Friendly’ against our Lions deserved the treatment of a guest in our country, our Lion’s den. It was gracious of them (or maybe FORCED) to make the den a temporary Anfield (but we appreciate it lots
).
I came with mixed reactions coz though I’ve been supporting Liverpool since Kenny Daglish times, I was always more into Malaysia cup supporting our Lions. I was devastated when we stopped joining the cup & created S-League. I continued being a Tampines Rovers fan til now.
I wanted a many goals draw as my philosophy in paying for a soccer match ticket is to catch all those beautiful goals & saves & moves! But what I saw made me reflect. I came to support more on the Lions (furthermore National Day is round the corner so the patriotic feeling is stronger than ever) & see how Liverpool will handle them. It’s like Starwars vs Star Trek or Transformers vs Terminators!!! I ended up supporting Liverpool as the Lions displayed a non-friendly game in my opinion. Tackles are done WITHOUT hand shakes. And there were numerous of them. Where is our Singa courtesy??? Where da dey? I can only conclude that the Lions felt inferior (which they shouldn’t) OR they’re plainly Man Utd fans bearing grudges. WHat other reasons can it be? haiz…..I felt ashamed we lost 5-0 when Thailand drew 1-1 with them; maybe some Lions were not concentrating on the game but on their feelings instead. BUT Liverpool did field an almost full team against us. Good try Lions, good defending, reflect on this unfriendly game (& act responsibly in a friendly with guests, there’re young Lions watching) & don’t worry. People like me put country first than interests in soccer clubs, be it Tampines Rovers or Liverpool. Don’t worry, be happy bruders!
Christopher Cheong whats wrong with you?
the support for a club and the support of a national team are 2 different levels of support.
when singapore played against other rival nations in asia, i sang my heart out along with my friends too. i’m sure those singaporean fans present that day would too.
but its liverpool we are watching there. we dont want say, a national player of ours break a 20million torres’ leg out there right?
its just a different level of support i am talking about.
it makes me question. do you ever go down personally to support
OUR VERY OWN NATIONAL TEAM?
you may say you’re busy with all your stuff, whatever. but can you honestly say you’ve made an effort to support the Lion’s or any singaporean athlete sincerely, wholeheartedly, and not be afraid to sing out loud and not be shy?
stay cool, focused, and clear-minded alright. dont flame and bash people for the sake of doing so.
and peace
we’re all sons of singapore
was at the match and all went well when something happened which completely disgusts me.
Singaporeans claiming to be Pool supporters actually cheered, yes cheered when one of our very own received a yellow card. DISGRACEFUL! i cannot believe my ears when it happened. but it did. and thats the sad reality. to those of you who are guilty of this, i say get lost and out of Singapore. throw your citizenship away. u not fit to be a Singaporean.
Liverpool does not feed you. Singapore does. Liverpool does not provide you with a safe home to reside in. Singapore does.
so wake up your idea!
and to flamers out there waiting to flame me, i m a true supporter of our National Team regardless of how bad they play. i go to watch them play whenever possible.
i just feel tht the behaviour of a few fans really brings our reputation as a nation down the drain
LIVERPOOL runs through my blood!! ManU fans can say whatever u want but we Liverpool fans know most of u are fair weather fans!!
Well, was great ta see Liverpool in town but if you Kop Fans think that that was the best, you should have been in Bukit Jalil ta Watch the Red Devils in Action. That was way better…. And to all you Liverpool Fans, STOP chanting about History. Its all Man United’s revolution and we are they to stay and Conquer. 100’s of songs and passion can’t bring you cups and glory. Hail MAN UNITED… Once a DEVIL, Always a DEVIL… Glory Glory Man United…
For those who did not experience the match live, you are entitled to your own comments of our loyalty in terms of the support we gave to our home grown singapore team. You call us betrayers and are disgraced at our antics for all you like but only those who were there can vouge for the reality of the situation.
And to all those who were with me in the stadium, the uncles, aunties, kids, grannies, brothers and sisters, non liverpool and even that lady who was wearing that lampard jersey in the KOP stand, they all can attest to our undying support for both clubs. Be it liverpool or singapore cause there was never a moment when a single jeer of “boo” was heard, except perhaps when lampard jersey wearing lady walked pass the KOP stand
We liverpool fans respect and support the Singapore Team as much as liverpool. And if singapore were to have scored, the jubilation and hysteria would be recipocated equally to our boys.
Bring malaysia cup back and you will definitely see man u, liverpool, chelsea, arsenal, spurs..etc etc fans all united as one as we cheer our singapore boys.
To watch the game on tv is one thing, to experience the moment live, ……its a spectacle by itself.
You’ll Never Walk Alone Singapore Lions and Liverpool FC!
Daryl , I am afraid you are missing the Points . The shameful stupid idiotic shallow laughable behaviour are what they are and judging from responses like yours they are true . The whole point is about having a BALANCE between adoring your heroes and being loyal to your own Country in occassions like this , NOT in comparison with other occasions . What a laughable bunch . Yes , they say correctly we will never see it anywhere else such behaviour and that is because citizens of other Countries know when and how to draw a line , a balance between adoring your foreign heroes and loyalty to your own Country .
It was great to see our National Stadium with almost full capcity crowd again but really so sad to see that most of them were there to cheer and support for Liverpool and not our own Lions. Where are those so called “DIE HARD FANS”?!? Not ever a single “ROAR” for our Lions! Where were YOU(DIE HARD FANS) when the SINGAPORE team really needs YOU! So what if it’s Liverpool! Where is your loyalty lah! No wonder our Lions went down 5 goals to nil! Thank YOU very much “DIE HARD FANS” or should i call YOU “DEAD HOPELESS FANS” for turning up for our opponents!
My sincere condolences to our National Team!
Me,Dissapointed Lions Fan.
my love for red is like my need for red blood….u know guys there is only 1 red in england and that is “THE REDS” and please do not call it a devil red…bcoz devils are not good…there r evil…Liverpool achieved everything and still keep on achieving now whereby other teams learn to achieve wat THE REDS had done many times b4..so please all the manchester “who” fan shut up and zip ur mouth…
Wow.. a lot of emotion writing.. anyway i will like to praised Haris Harun if im not wrong.. the 18 year old guy which plays confidently against a multi million team.. Singapore need to produce more of these qualities fast to catch up with the rest start from south east asia teams..
Cheers Haris
I wasn’t a big fan of liverpool, the only reason i bought the ticket was to see fernando torres, however during the liverpool anthem i suddenly felt like crying, the atmosphere during the anthem was mind blowing with all the fans singing and lifting a huge liverpool flag, and the song was beautifully sang.
I wasn’t able to catch liverpool on friday and saturday since i have to go to work *sigh* it’s a rare opportunity to see them cruising along singapore river
hey you…rascist…YOU should be ashamed uf urself for giving that kind of commments…
WHY DONT U DO BACK TO WATEVER HOLE U CAME FROM AND STAY THERE…!! did not expect this kind uf people to be alive and walking in this part of the world…
there were about 60 000 people @ the stadium…why dont u try saying it to their face?!
much as many uf us thought so… YOU ARE JUST A KEYBOARD WARRIOR…:)
for those people who are losing perspective on the whole issue… dont be so narrow minded pls..it is just a sport…just enjoy the whole experience and live with it…well..if u cant handle that..u can go and stay with that guy RASCIST in his hole..u guys would make a nice community…hahahaha
Honest speaking Liverpool players are playing as a team good co-operation and often passing the ball to team mate that is what i call an experience soccer player less dribble always ran forward to the ball when team mate passing.( Acvice to singapore player please do not dribble too much or you guys just want to show off please ….playing as a team 5-0 you deserve it )i’m sad to see you guys play so weak with Liverpool at least 1 score and i feel proud of it.It’s a shamed to me
If there was 6 mins extra time in the liverpool vs thailand match, the thais would have put one for the win! Seriously..the thais were more technically better then the singapore team. Its time we overhaul the whole national squad, get a better national team coach (singaporean-Fandi Ahmad is my choice) that will instill passion, skills and technical abilities to OUR national team. I am deeply sadden by the second half thumping..it seems as though the defence and midfielders gave up… it was so painful to watch. I walked away from the tele during the 3rd goal only to hear from my brother that singapore had conceded a 4th goal 2mins later…
I want the national team of the great era of the malaysian cup..it is about time we bring the quality back!
(if you visit Gronigen,Netherlands..get into the FC Gronigen Bar and you will see, up on its wall, is a picture of Fandi Ahmad among FC Gronigen’s legends. Fandi is also placed in the club’s Hall of Fame. Fandi is a legendary FC Gronigen player who scored a shock 2-0 win over INTER MILAN!…So if you asked me who is my hero???? I say Fandi is my hero..so will the FANS OF FC GRONIGEN!!!!)

LIVERPOOL WILL DEFINATELY TAKE THE PREMIER CUP THIS COMING SEASON. THAT’S WITHOUT A DOUBT. LIVERPOOL FOREVER !
Goodbye Fergie,Farewell Man U. Hello Rafa , Welcome Liverpool.
@christopher:
and how does a comparison of different occasions not show our loyalty?
firstly, liverpool is not a nation. its just a club. the type of support you give to a club, is NOT the same, and cannot be equate to be the same, as the support for a nation.
whenever singapore played against a rival SE asia nation in football games, we were ALWAYS, ALWAYS fully behind the Lion’s. I was always there. Those who were there will know too. Even the Lions’ players will know too. We always cheer for them and get excited when they are at the opponents’ final third.
how can you say we are not loyal?
I see your point, that on the same occasion, singaporeans at the stadium showed more support for liverpool than the lions. But thats understandable cause, people pay to come to watch liverpool play.
AND its not like we didnt support the lions. As i’ve said in earlier posts, whenever Lion’s get close to pool’s end of the pitch, we get excited too. When Shi Jiayi’s through pass released Shahril Ishak, we were so excited and happy to see our own team getting dangerous. Unfortunately, his weak shot was easily saved by Cavalieri. We cheered when singapore players are being substituted in and out. We showed our support to them, because it was they who won us competitions at regional level. WE DO LOVE THEM.
We only booed when singapore didnt play fairly. There were heavy challenges by Mustafic Fahrudin and Noh Alam Shah against Liverpool players. But we also voiced out our discontent when Masherano tackled some Lion players unfairly as well. Of course we fans are unhappy, we wouldnt want to see anyone injured.
Then we also booed when the MC was trying to market our very own S-league. but come on, not many people follow S-league nowadays. because its boring, you cant blame them.
But many, and i dare say, MANY, are always, truely, and fully behind our own national team when facing rival nations. Always.
Notice the keyword? its nation. Not a club.
Dont kick up a big fuss over this. theres no conflict over showing more support for liverpool, and not singapore.
Cause liverpool is not a country. dont call us traitors, shameless, cause we are not forsaking singapore for another foreign nation.
I love singapore!!! Her national team, and i love Liverpool FC as well.
Ha Ha Ha! Aiyoh!
It’s Daryl(Liverpool) versus Christopher(Lions) now!
Alamak!
To all Pools supporter here, we just had had an enjoyable and fun night and will stay in our memory forever. To non Pools supporters, I can understand your frustration in not seeing your stars in flesh. So stop picking on things that you know does not hold water – maybe you will act in the “same” way that you claimed Pools supporters behaved.
To all true Singaporeans, we support Singapore whether you are Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona , etc fans. Majulah Singapura!
Try to go to watch the match on Aug 12 (I think the MC mentioned Lions playing China) – and you non-Pools fans can judge whether indeed Singapore gets the support or otherwise? I am sure Chinese fans there will be rooting for their team. Whatever it is, let us be gracious in extending a warm welcome to other teams and their fans. When I last watched Singapore played China to a goalless draw, I heard Singapore fans telling China’s fans to go Geylang to find their sisters – is that the way we should behave? Is that the way to show our support to the Lions – surely NOT! It made me shameful to be sitting nearby to that fan that night.
“I heard Singapore fans telling China’s fans to go Geylang to find their sisters”
hahaha. thats funny.
but hey. its so wrong. very low class comment from that person. shame on him.
AND I’ll BE THERE FOR THE CHINA GAME!
Well. There is no need to give any unnecessary comments about this. Different people have different opinion, different thinking. You cannot make everyone to agree with what each other say. That’s why different people will support different clubs. It’s all depend on individuals.
Dont criticise all the liverpool fans in sg. Think about this, what if your own favourite club are here, i’m sure you will also did the same as what the liverpool fans did. They are just showing their love and loyal to the club. Of course, they do know that singapore is still their homeland! This is where we belong!
This is just a friendly match. And you can surely see how our national team played. They played well and take it seriously. They too show sportmanship. This is sport.
If you love any club just support your own club, there’s no need to give bad comments about other clubs. NOBODY is perfect! Why not spend time doing something good rather than wasting time criticising each other. Go support your own favourite club!
To all REDS fans out there,
We love liverpool for whatever it is. We dont have to take all unnecessary comments into heart. As long as we know who is good in our heart that will do. Support liverpool with our heart! Action speak louder than words!
To the SG team,
GO GO GO! Keep the spirit going! Show the world that singapore football are not bad at all. With all the young sporting talents in sg, in a few years, we will make it big in the world. Qualify for the world cup! GO Singapore!!
GO SINGAPORE!! GO LIVERPOOL!!
have a sneaky feeling tht the Chinese nationals will outnumber us Singaporeans lol WHICH should not be the case!
btw i am a full-blooded Chelsea fan and i wore my club’s jersey to the match. got some stares along the way but it was fun and i am proud to wear it!
Fandi Ahmad was known by Fans of FC Gronigen as ‘the Pearl’. How many singaporeans actually know that….Some of us only know El Nino, The Devil etc…But in Gronigen, Fandi is known as the Pearl!
How ironic! that others put up pictures of our countryman on their walls IN THEIR COUNTRY,while some of us sing songs of clubs that only care about our hard earn money…

I do not have the intention to offend those that paid good money to watch their favourite football club ‘live’. They are die-hard fans no doubt and, arent we all die-fans of something, be it food, clubs, brands or someone. My grudge is with the whole idea of pitting a club against a country. Should’nt it be a club against a club?
To the organi$er$:
“Very poorly done…”
“ridiculous…”
“clear money profiting intentions…”
and
To Singapore Sports & Recreational Ministry/Council and the Government:
If you want singapore to be a sporting nation, you should at least have top class sports facilities. So PLEASE PUMP SOME TAXPAYERS MONEY TO BUILD A GREAT NATIONAL STADIUM (that promotes sports and healthy lifestyles) INSTEAD OF PUMPING BILLION OF DOLLARS TO BUILD A CASINO-INTERGRATED-RESORT. (that promotes gambling and social problems)

Sons of Singapura
This is next to be being in Anfield….The last time my family saw the Pool players at the National Stadium, my son was 8 yrs old & after another 8 yrs later, he gets to see them again here…Its really awesome singing ‘YNWA” in front of the players and joining fellow Redders in cheering the Best club team in the World..
The pictures that I have will be cherished and kept as treasure…Next stop, the real thing will be going to Anfield.
You never walk alone, now & forever…………..
say what you want, come what may……i was,am and will forever be a Liverpool Football Club supporter, its been in me since the days of Ian St.John,Joey Jones,Jimmy Case……etc. You’ll Never Walk Alone
You will never walk alone….you walk empty handed for many years
I believe majority of the local fans would have given their support to the lions IF ONLY we had use HOME GROWN players to play the match. I doubt players like Daniel Bennent and Agu Cashmir know even how to sing our national anthem, let alone play their hearts out for the national team. The pro-foreigner talent policy have ripped off our national team! THe fans would rather see a spirited local Tong Hai or Fandi Ahmad playing their hearts out than to see a foreign player who plays without passion for the nation.
Yes Liverpool doesn’t feed me, Singapore also doesn’t feed me also. If I don’t work do you think government will come and feed me? I feed myself by working hard and erned my own money. These people who try to flame all the red supporters are pathetic and probably Mancs supporters. When mancs came to Singapore in 2001 where were all of you? Mancs insulted the national team by using Bathez as striker and you mancs lover cheered every time Bathez kicked the ball. Actually that act was totally insulted the Singapore national Team. All of you shut your mouths that time not even mentioned a word at all. Mancs whacked you that time So where were all of you so called “singapore national team lovers”
To Dudi
Don’t come and B@llshit about Bukit Jalil, I was there at that time visiting my nephew who lived just beside the Stadium @ vista commomwealth and I didn’t see that many and most of them even no wearing manc Kit ha ha ha.
i’m disturbed by the fact that national stadium is still not closed.
Repo_Rodeo, it’s not even comparable between Liverpool’s game in S’pore with MU’s game in Malaysia. LFC fans actually sang YNWA and banners all over the stadium. Malaysian MU fans wear the jersey and bz capturing photos. Apart from a great turnout, the MU game in M’sia was boring. The MU players doesn’t look interested and Evra even forced one of the backroom staff to take the medal. Rooney pushed the M’sian keeper just because he hurt his ears while challenging for the ball. What was he expecting, the keeper to move aside??.
come on fools fans.. u noe that you guys are 2nd to the the great man utd.. what?? 18 english titles?? when was that?? its the time when tv has no colour.. awww.. tats sad.. last season was the closest liverfools can ever win the title and they blew it..
yup, u guys have the strong support but whats the point of supporting a team that has nothing to boast about? what?? 5 european champions?? apart from the fabulous come back against milan, the rest was when the time when policeman wear short pants..
sighhhh.. liverfools will never be as big as man utd…
peace out fools!!!!
shampoo rejoice – your comment is really funny
Its very Lucky for singapore escape with 0-5 down against Liverpool.
where’s malcolm mcdonald and billy bremner and mick channon? liverpool without kenny and keegan and tosh and …when men loved football, not money
I read comments about lack of patriotism for Singapore team but I think the problem lies with the fact that almost half the team are not bred in Singapore. And furthermore it still cannot be considered the best team in South East Asia even though filled with “foreign talent”. I am not surprised if many fans would prefer to support a good “foreign talent” team like Liverpool instead of Singapore team.
Don’t be full by Racist. He has so many grammatical mistakes that I am sure he is a bitter, lonely and a habitual shyt stirrer living in Pulau Pawai.
Did Singaporeans boo the National Team? NO.
Did Singaporeans cheer and clap when the National players’ name were read? YES
Did Singaporeans cheers the National team when they made the occassional forays upfield? YES
The organisers wanted the Majulah SIngapore anthem to be sung but it was not allowed. WIll the police please enlighten us as to why it couldnt be sung?
To those who are slamming the Liverpool fans right left and center, I am sure many of you can name the world tennis players but dont even bother to find out who our man and woman’s tennis champions are, you know who Bolt is but may not even bother to find out who our male and female atheletes are, you know about Michael Phelps but tell me, who are our 100m freestyle and backstroke champions?
Look at today’s Straits Times; the pic of Michael Owen and Bebetov takes up more space than the story about SIngapore winning 12 golds on the following page. Until the tabloids begin to get their act right when it comes to local sports, let’s stop playing the juvenile blame game. After all SIngapore vs Malaysia last year, so many fans in Liverpool jerseys were at the stadium to lend their support
As for the handful of man u supporters? well I rest my case.
St.Bernard discovered the founder of Man U after a charity raise during the depression. St.Bernard is a DOG. Why dun just stick to Newton Heath because that’s the original name.
I THINK YOU SHUD GET LOST!!!!
THIS IS ABT:

i think all la…
GO GO CHELSEA!!! CHELSEA CHELSEA,LRAFA GET LOST!!!
TORRES GO TO HELL!!
There’s really no need to quarrel among ourselves about disgraceful behaviors or ungracious acts. We’ve got black sheep among the flock, anywhere we go.
Why get so worked up about crowd cheering when a Singaporean player got yellow-carded? IMO, any player resorting to foul-play, reckless tackling, violence on the pitch is unprofessional. So its obvious the crowd cheered the good decision of the referee for warning the player for his conduct.
No need to blast the fans for being traitors to the country or anything else. That’s just what the referee is for, to ensure fair-play.
By the way, LFC doesn’t feed us. Similarly, FAS doesn’t feed us, neither does the nation feed us, it’s the tax payers $ that feed FAS. (To think that they produced such horrendous result compared to what Thailand produced…. honestly, I’m still curious what purpose does S-league serve?)
john doe, funny how u needed 20 years to play catch up.
nuff said really. what a sad excuse for a manc supporter u are.
It took Busboy 20 yrs to be at par to the great KOP since the 90’s.
Scouse rules lah! How could you pick an opera singer to sing
Gerry Marsden’s Mersey classic? What a Laugh mate!
Red Till Dead.
To Reds Fans : Truely amazing days we had, atmosphere at the national stadium was great. U guys are the best.
To Lion Supporters : There is a difference between supporting a club and supporting your own country. Even during the malaysia cup days, at Sha Alam Stadium, over 60,000 travelling fans travel north to support Singapore. I will not be surprise if many of them were at the national stadium on the 26 Jul 2009.
To those who are racists : use your brain if u got one.. we contributed to their pay cheques from merchandises, paid TV.. etc. on the bigger picture, it is the yellow skin and the rest from the east who could probably save the world economy caused by the greedy “u know who”. I wonder who will get the last laugh. Truely pathetic.
To other supporters : Feel free to voice your opinions and support, we respect that. Do remember although we had not won the league for 18 long years, the support from the fans never dies, we stick through it thick and thin no matter what. I wonder how many self-proclaim Devils fans will be around when they stop winning for 18 years.
You will never walk along
I was at the stadium basically bcoz i’d like to see the Reds in action…the atmosphere was great HOWEVER after the game started…i somehow or rather felt a tinge of sadness as i look around…
n asked myself….
How nice it’d be if the Sea of Red was for the Lions…as it was our Home ground Lion’s den…
How nice it’d be if after the singing of U’l never Walk Alone…a even LOUDER song called Majulah SIngapura echoed on….
I honestly think and feel that if it did…The Lions might have ROARED n came back with a few goals…
I felt very very sorry for the 11 Lions on the field that day…Can U IMAGINE how they MUST HAVE FELT????
Was in Bangkok too and i think one of the main reason the Thais did much better was bcoz, everytime Liverpool attacked, the Thais cheered…
EVERYTIME Thailand attacked …they cheered EVEN LOUDER…..
Thats the BIGGEST difference Brudder…National Pride at being David facing GOliath…
When Japan/Korea hosted World Cup..facing Brazil,Italy or England…YES thr’s alot of Fans for the 03 countries in Japan/Korea…but u dun see them donning BRazilian,English or Italian colors nor singing their songs…its called National Pride..
Give u an example..
Geylang United visit Wembley for training match with England National team…
Wembley packed full of English decked in Geylang United green jerseys singing Majulah SIngapura….
What is the Daily News gonna say the next day???This will never happen in a 100 years…Malay saying…Malu…Shameful..
Pay u $88 you’ll support another team?? Is that a reason or EXCUSE? so if they actually handout $88 at the stadium u will switch support?? I believe its more of an excuse…sorry brudder..
I do support and like Liverpool…I’ve even been to Anfield…but…I think sometimes for our Football to improve…we not only must “blame” the powers that be….but on a PERSONAL note…deep down…We must really reach inside and play OUR own little part in supporting and being responsible for its growth…
End of the days…its still our own blood…
N its thicker than water….El Nino or watever…
Just my 2cents worth….and my apologies to the National Team for putting u all guys down…U guys tried…We as fans as locals….should have done better too….
Let us not assume that all at the stadium were Singaporeans. The official fan clubs from Brunei, Malaysia (3 or 4 busloads) and Indonesia and even Perth were also at the stadium in the Kop end (east entrance)
I am sure that the locals did not boo.
How did Liverpool,Man U,Chelsea,Real Madrid,Barca etc became amongst the most profitable successful footballing clubs in the world? 1.History, 2.Talented players, 3.Most importantly, LOCAL SUPPORT.
The sleague does not even come close to the Mleague in terms of history and huge Fan base support. I feel that it is partly due to the size of our island state that have clubs divided by districts instead of states. So away and home matches has little significance on the club’s 12th man.How would we improve on this issue? We should have strong district identity. Like during home games, home districts should have club flags hung up on the side of the road just like when it is the national day, so when the visiting team bus drives into the home district, they know that they are in enemy territory and would feel the pressure to perform well. Bazaar or ‘pasar malam’ should be set up just outside home stadiums, adding to a carnival like atmosphere. With all the ruckus on every match day, the fans would surely enjoy the atmosphere. Adding to some strong friendly rivalry.
Fans that have been to their club away matches against DPMM would know what i mean. The hostilities you feel during match day at Brunei’s bandar seri stadium rekindles ones memory of the Malaysian Cup days.( I remembered hundred of SG fans kicking the kallang station MRT train doors during Singapore’s home matches against her malaysian opponents. The MRT driver refuse to open the train door promptly upon arrival, which anoyed fans wanting to go home after matches)Sweet days of real rivalry.HAHAHA
Another problem with the sleague is that it has no relegation zone. The last bottom three or two club should be relegated to prime-league. That would push clubs and players into performing their best to avoid relegation hence improving in quality in every match.
I feel that it takes two to tango. To be fair, the sleague has improve from the time it started. And now it is up to locals to support local. If what i hope for come to reality..I can then brag to my cousin, who is residing in another district, about how my club beat his club in their last encounter.Ole!
Mohamed.
I am a die hard Liverpool fan and to be honest some of my posting were printed in the Liverpool Echo (a local Liverpool tabloid) but rest assured that whenever Singapore plays, I cheer them and feel so proud to see them trying and winning. However I still cannot erase the bitter feeling in my mouth when Egmar Gonclaves(sic) decided to go back to Brazil after his days as a SIngapore international footballer were numbered or when Alam Shah knocked an international team mate senselessfor no rhyme or reason. I hope that his pertinent lament about caling the stadium Anfield was a result of him turning over a new leaf. I also hope that Precious, Bennett, Fahrudin, Jiayi, Agu, Li and Duric will choose to remain in Singapore, after their boots bid adieu to competitive football in this land, and help us in our search for footballing greatness.
cheers
ak
