One of the great things about living in Singapore (besides the food) is the proximity to so many great places in Asia to go on holiday. Coming from Australia, Singapore was usually the first stop in any of my trips to the region. Given the distance, international trips for me happened once, maybe twice a year. Now that I’m 5 hours closer, travel is a lot easier. Thanks to the number of low-cost carriers, it’s also a lot cheaper. Be it a bus ride into Malaysia or a short flight to so many exotic locations in the region, the challenge is not so much the distance; the real challenge is finding the time to go.

I speak with expats and local Singaporeans alike and there is this idea that Singapore is a bit like a black hole. Before you know it, the weeks and months have flown by. Moving from Australia to Singapore, one of the other challenges has been dealing with a lot less annual leave. I’m used to 20 days in Australia and it’s only 15 here (for some of us at least!).

We all work hard here in Singapore which is why I like Zuji’s novel idea of petitioning the Singapore government for an extra day off. If Melbourne can get a public holiday for the Melbourne Cup, then I’m sure it can’t be too difficult to come up with a reason for another day off here. Sign the petition now. While you’re at it, check out the latest travel deals.

Why not make the Singapore Big Sweep day a public holiday? That’s a lot less counter-productive than having too many holidays for businesses, I’m sure that’s the bosses’ main concern.

June and July has a big gap without a public holiday! 1 extra for July would be nice!!!

It is definitely necessary to increase the number of holidays in Singapore. The workforce needs more breaks to recharge themselves for better performance and not to forget the school kids who nowadays facing great pressure on their school work.

Oh yes ……. fully agreed, life is not just about work work work. Long hours do not necessary mean that you are more productive. Not just for working adults, count the students in, I think they clocked in more hours than then us adults.

  • Amelia said:

Yes. If there’s any reason we need for this extra day off, it should be on our own birthday!

  • Hara said:

Yes, it would be good if we can have 1 or 2 days extra in addition to our current holiday. So that we can have more family time together due to work stress.

    Hi,

There should not have Public Holiday at this moment. Most people are working 3-4 days week to save coorperate cost. No extra money for holiday, save for raining day ?

I think we should make Children’s Day (1st October) an official Public Holiday.

In that way the adult can bring their children out to play; promoting family ties for Singapore.

Our biggest foreign force; the Chinese from China, can also take this day to celebrate their China Independence Day.

Strongly support for the idea. Need to strike a balance between works and leisure.

  • Norizan said:

Yeah, we definitely need one if not two extra holidays..lol.. The govt emphasises on family bonding but when june school holidays come, not a single holiday can be found in that month..haiz..

Holiday is good . However may look at working days with respect to age.
    Suggestion:working wk
    55 yrs to 62 : 4.5 day a week
    62 to 65 : 4 days a week
    Above 65 : other arrangement
    What u think

Propose Children or Family day as public holiday. Give more time to spend with our love ones. What is the point only children holiday but working parents still need to go for work. What can they do at home alone?????

OMG! I cant wait for that idea to take place….Finally i can have some time for my poor little kids to spend quality time with them.

Holidays are essential in life especially if you are a working adult. All of us look forward to any sort of holiday to spend time together with our family and loved ones. Singaporeans are lacking much interaction with their own families what more with the society. More holidays means more interaction with family and friends. this will do good fr a Healthy Family and a Healthy Society in general. I think most of them will agree to my views .

    Hi,

Totally agreed, we need more days off, work and no play makes Jack a dull boy! You know what that’s why we are not as creative as the others….

  • yip said:

Yea! Bring it on! Isn’t it governement hope for more babies? make it more holidays. Less stress and more travel and more get-together time for couple!simply make “Family day” the public holiday.

  • Az " Man " said:

Yeah.. Monday … and we will have a new problem , ” Tuesday Blues “.. Come on Guys, we will never had enough. Maybe A Racial Harmony Day or A National Family Day on a Monday per calender year would be more appropriate. Thnx..
