Former President Corazon Aquino died after a 16-month battle against colon cancer, son and Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III announced to media early Saturday. Here’s an excerpt of the statement he read to media:

Our mother peacefully passed away at 3:18 a.m. August 1, 2009 of cardio respiratory arrest. She would have wanted us to thank each and every one of you for all the prayers and your continued love and support. It was her wish for all of us to pray for one another and our country. Hinihiling po ng aming pamilya ang konting panahon para makasama namin ang aming mahal na ina.

Reacting to the news, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who is now in the US, said that the country has “lost a national treasure” as she declared a 10-day period of national mourning. Former president Fidel Ramos said in a television interview that “not only the entire Filipino nation grieves, but the whole world. Cory Aquino represented the past and the future of our people and led in the direction for a better future for our people.” Supporters from all over the country and the world are now extending their prayers and sympathies to the country’s icon for democracy through social networks like Twitter. Former cabinet officials who served under the former leader also extended their sympathies through local television, calling her the heroine of democracy in the Philippines. Family friend Boy Abunda said in a television interview that Aquino’s children including Kris Aquino was with the former leader when she died. Armed policemen and security guards were seen outside the Heritage memorial park in Manila where the body of the late Aquino was brought.

In a television interview, former president Joseph Estrada said he was touched by the gesture of the former president when she apologized to him. Aquino supported the ouster of Estrada during the second People Power in 2001, which also catapulted President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo into power.

Television reports said that people have started placing flowers in front of the home of the Aquinos in Quezon City.

Condolence to the Aquino family, I hope Nonoy with the same fire will continue the work of his mom Cory and father Ninoy who are movers of true democracy. Cory and Ninoy tried to free us from the bondage of opportunists like oligarchs and capitalists and other groups that take advantage of situations to achieve their vested interests at the expense of the honest and hardworking ordinary common Filipino. I guess this is what true democracy is about.

everlasting happiness; life fulfillment; and overjoyed accomplishments are the fruits where our beloved tita cory had experienced this is through the extended efforts in favor of others despite she became a loser.

through her our country’s democracy back in 1986 were restored from the so corrupt life killer Marcos regime.

despite being just a simple citizen after her presidency, she were so vocal when she sees a corruption in the previous and current administration.

and today we lost her. this is also a lesson to all of us that we are not permanent here, a lesson that we must do good to others even in a little things, and the happiness we experience will be unexplainable. thats the life of tita cory and i urge everyone to pattern their lives of her because she serves as a model to us.

and for her soul, we knew that our almighty God is there waiting for her already and for now i am sure our national hero who went ahead of her Senator Benigno Aquino 11 is here to fetch her.

what accomplishment you have done to our country. tita cory and senator benigno aquino 11. we will never forget you.
both your names is now in the philippine history and the future generations will just read in the history book and realized that there were a couple whom God made them as instruments for the good of our country.

i am a living witness for the democracy restoration back in 1986 i remember at the capital town of Mambajao in Camiguin fronting the town market the overnight celebration was done and that was so joyful celebration where the political leaders were in reconciliation. that was then tita cory became a president through the people power.

    THE INSPIRER’S VOICE (adopted)

The Inspirer’s voice can uplift any soul. It is like a fresh wind that blows upon the heart and gives it peace.

Whenever the Inspirer sings, even the angels bow down and listen, for no angel has ever been to the source of the Inspirer’s music.

Some may say that food for the body is the most important thing, but this is not so. The soul needs to be nourished and fed as much as the physical body, and there is no nourishment greater than to hear the song of the Inspirer.

The Inspirer thus takes care of her voice by taking care of her heart. She doesn’t let trivial matters disturb her. She doesn’t let anger strain the melodious vibration of her soul.

Condolence to the family of Pres Cory. Actually when I found out she was suffering from cancer stage 4 and was into Chemo and was confined again in the Hospital taking pain reliever and unstable Blood pressure. I remember when my mom suffered the same thing she always
asked me and my sister how we are and if I already got to the market, instead her complaining of her suffering. I saw my mom in the person of Pres. Cory being the soft spoken person that they were so when I got the news, I prayed to God that if Cory will not be cured, get her now and shorten her pains and if not prolong her life coz I know how it was, the pain me and my sister experienced and the pain my mom had suffered. I remember me going to jose reyes to get morphin for free pain reliever. I Hope to meet kris and will tell her, BE STRONG. Were the same, my mom love my husband and favorite. be happy our parents are now HAPPY TOGETHER. take care

She was, in everyway, the epitomy of an ideal transformative leader. Her passing is a big loss to our country. I am sure that she will continue to be our inspiration in fighting corruption and transactional politics that has become a norm in our country today. President Cory, I would like to personally thank you for all the sacrifices and the great contribution you gave us as a people. I thank the Lord for having given you to us, a woman leader that we can all be proud of, and worth emulating. We will miss you, but we promise to carry on the fight. I know you will be with us til we win this fight (even if it may take generations from now, we will not give up the fight)!!! sylvia

She was, in everyway, the epitome of an ideal transformative leader. Her passing is a big loss to our country. I am sure that she will continue to be our inspiration in fighting corruption and transactional politics that has become a norm in our country today. President Cory, I would like to personally thank you for all the sacrifices and the great contribution you gave us as a people. I thank the Lord for having given you to us, a woman leader that we can all be proud of, and worth emulating. We will miss you, but we promise to carry on the fight. With former President Cory Aquino’s passing away, the country has become bereft of a unifying force in its continuing search for lasting peace, justice and democracy. No matter how selfishly we desire to have her with us, it is God’s design that she leave us for a better place where there is neither sorrow nor pain. Former President Aquino’s death marks the passing of an era in Philippine history.

My family is praying for the Aquinos and their siblings in their bereavement. May they all find succor in the love of the Filipino nation, a collective outpouring of love, grief and sympathy that have never been seen in a long time in our country.

As a foreigner residing in the Philippines, my impression of President Aquino’s contribution and legacy to the Philippines is of a leader who led the country out of the dark tunnel of dictatorship into the sunshine of democracy and freedom for the proud people of the Philippines. The Filipinos can be justifably proud that the country had produced such a great daughter and her family such a fine mother.

    Tita Cory,
Thank you. You have given Filipinos back their belief in themselves and hope for their country. It is not easy for Filipinos to stand up and unite but you gave them something to believe in. With you the Filipinos captured the world’s attention , we showed the world in a grand scale how faith can really move mountains. Filipino Pride ! and the world gave us a standing ovation. You helped restore our belief in ourselves as a nation.A housewife in a yellow dress was able to unify a nation because of her integrity, sincerity and faith , faith so steadfast that you simply had to believe. Yellow does not stand for cowardice , in the Philippines it stands for courage . It is a symbol of faith , courage and hope.It reminds us of the courage to fight for what is right , a reminder that we can be united as a nation and hope that someday Filipinos will learn to see how great the Philippines is and how beautiful we are as a people. That we will learn to love our country enough to stand up against anything that ruins it.Up to now, tita cory, your yellow ribbons are still pinned to our country’s heart.

President Cory passed on at a most wondrous and perfect time – on August 1st, the first Saturday of the month, traditionally a day of devotion to Our Blessed Lady, at 3:18am, the hour of great mercy and while her children were praying the fifth mystery of the Sorrowful Mystery of the Holy Rosary which is the Crucifixion and Death of our Lord. Yes, Tita Cory, into our Father’s hands do we commend your spirit, it is finished.
Your life has touched many here and abroad. By accepting the challenge of leading our nation, plucking you from your ordinary life, you steered our country to experience the fruits of democracy once again after years of martial rule and dictatorship. You displayed courage against the odds and challenges that faced you as you governed our nation. And even as you stepped down from the Presidency your life as Citizen Cory was still devoted to serving the country, continuing your husband’s guiding philosophy that “the Filipino is worth dying for” with your own passionate principle that “the Filipino is worth living for”. Farewell Tita Cory…thank you for your life, for your heroism, for your example.

    THE LIGHT IS GONE

The news that President Cory Aquino passed away broke the airwaves first thing last Saturday morning. We all knew that it had to happen
sooner or later, we just did not expect it to come sooner. My heart became heavy as the radio re-played her speeches, pretty soon the tears flowed, and kept flowing. At first, I could not comprehend why. I was not an activist at college, whenever the LFS (League of Filipino Students) called for a rally at UST, we would go to Harrison Plaza instead. I was not at EDSA I, I was at EDSA 2 though. I supported her, yes, by signing the petition for her presidency, voting for her and Doy Laurel, boycotting the Marcos cronies, etc. Nothing great, in my opinion. I was a fence-sitter, I chose to stay and watch in the sidelines. So why was I so moved by her demise? I
fell in line today for the public viewing in La Salle Greenhills, hoping for an answer to the sorrow that I was feeling. As I stood in front of her casket, all I could say was “thank you”. It did not help that she looked a lot like my departed mother. Afterward, still with no answer, I saw the headline of a newspaper saying “..a gift has been lost..” I felt ashamed to admit that, like most gifts, I realized her value and contributions and sacrifices now that she’s gone. A gift that came once in our lifetime and one that may never
come again. I felt guilty that I had forgotten the legacies that she left: self-lessness and sacrifice – to always put the welfare of
    others before yours; love of country and fellowmen – that not only is the Filipino worth dying for, but is worth living and serving for;
unwavering faith in God – that once you’ve done everything you can, lift everything to God, He’ll do the rest, and finally, belief in
oneself – that one can make a difference. I am reminded of a song that goes “It is better to light just one little candle than to stumble in the dark. Better far that you light just one little candle, all you need is a tiny spark. If we’d all say a prayer that the world would be free, a wonderful dawn of a new day we’d see”. Cory Aquino was that spark of light, reminding us that there is always hope. She inspired us with her faith and strength of character amidst trials. She showed us what is good, and just, and great in being a Filipino. She generously gave and expected nothing in return. She graced us with her presence. For all of this and more, we are eternally grateful, and we vow to always remember.

The light is gone, and the dawn somehow looks dreary.

the cory phenomenon is something that should open our eyes and understanding how colonial politics can be colored and in a big way exploited by both the vatican and the USA hegemonic foreign policy.
Benigno Aquino murder is something that galvanize the people to say that democracy was restored in the country by laying his own life. but the Filipino people, even after many generations will never learn what are the causes, real ones, behind this sacrifice of Ninoy’s life.
Cory was pushed into prominence by many unknown factors but for sure, even herself was not sure of the real political issues behind the furor during that time. in the part of her family, Ninoy was the blacksheep that they can not disloged just like that in their hacienda thus Ninoy being sacrificed in such a way, which brought more benefits to the Cojuangco family than keeping him as the virtual caretaker of the hacienda which was under the gestapo type of armed men keeping tab of the security of the hacienda. Ninoy has his own made rebel group that keep the hacienda in his protective mechanism. there was a game spy versus syp that makes the relationship betrween the Aquino and the Cojuangco a true to life Dynasty story with both sides clinging to the coat tails of Uncle Sam’s favorite trouble makers/shooters: the boys from Langley. in the end, the tragedy and the murder of Ninoy was passed on to somebody who farthest in his mind would ever order the plot to bring himself down from power. No matter what political persuasion one may have, it will not changed the truth that President Marcos won the election at that time, and the power grab was engineered in such a way by the covert operation of the CIA is a distortion, an anomaly in our history that will go deep into the shallow mind of our people as something that will darken the whole of our history further more. a story that will be retold and retold until by repetition, the lies sounded like true and to the superficial minds, the propaganda sticks.
