People from all walks of life braved heavy rains and long lines just to get a glimpse of former President Corazon Aquino who passed away early Saturday after a year-long battle with colon cancer.

Politicians and showbiz personalities, most of them wearing black or yellow—Aquino’s signature color—also attended the first night of Aquino’s wake at the La Salle Greenhills gym.

Public viewing of the remains of the former leader started late Saturday and will continue until Monday morning. There will be 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. breaks.

Among those who visited the wake included former president Fidel V. Ramos, Aquino’s predecessor, who arrived just in time for the holy mass.

Vice president Noli de Castro, Senator Manuel Roxas II and former Senators Jovito Salonga and Robert Jaworski also came to condole with the Aquino family.

“We lost an exemplary leader of great quality and honesty,” said Salonga.

Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim was seen shedding a tear for the former president.

Whistleblower Jun Lozada who was also present said he would continue the fight for truth, as Aquino told him to do so. “She told me never to give up even when it may seem nobody cares anymore. She told me to hold on to faith,” said Lozada.

Peaceful death

Kiko Dee, grandson of Aquino, said she died peacefully.

“She took one last breath and there was a flat line. I think she passed away peacefully,” Dee told Yahoo! Philippines.

He said he was able to talk to his grandmother before she was given a dose of pain killer.

“We all had our chances to tell her everything. I told her ‘Thank you’ for being an inspiration,” said Dee. “I cannot help but feel that my feeling of loss as his grandson is as big as the feeling of loss as a Filipino,” he added.

Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III welcomed guests who condoled with the family. Aquino’s youngest daughter, popular actress Kris Aquino came with her husband and professional basketball player James Yap.

After the holy mass held during the wake, Jiggy Cruz, son of Aquino’s eldest daughter Ballsy, thanked the people for extending their sympathies to their family.

“On behalf of our family, I would like to thank each and every one of you who joined us in this time of grief. These expressions of support have condoled us. We will miss our Lola [grandmother] very much,” said Cruz.

Another grandson read Aquino’s “prayer for a happy death.”

“When that final moment does come..let them know how much happiness they have brought to my life. Let them realize that separation is just for a short while as we prepare for a reunion,” he read.

I was in the medical school when Ninoy Aquino died until Cory Aquino became president of the Philippines. I saw the heroism of Ninoy and the patriotism of Cory. Values that Filipinos need to observe and practice… When I became a doctor, I promised to do the same.

Kaya for twenty years of being a doctor I kept on doing medical missions in remote communities and giving free medical services to poor patients.

The scenes I have seen on TV during the wake of Cory Aquino show how much the Filipinos love her. It made me promise all the more to continue doing medical missions and giving free services … in memory of Cory Aquino.

When I was younger at barely 9 years old that was during the time of the campaign of Cory and Marcos, my grandfather was a die-hard Marcos fan and I helped him to put the banner of Marcos at our home in province. I would say that I was a die-hard fan as well because of the influence of my grandfather. Up to know I really admire Marcos for what he had done for the country but I would say the rivalry of Marcos and Cory was all over. I salute the former Corazon Aquino for her achievements. As an elected president, I know she was not corrupt and as an ordinary wife of Benigno Aquino Jr and and mother without deep knowledge in politics and governing the public office I would say she had good achievements compared to those who are already in the public service and then elected as president. I believe corruptions during the time of Cory Aquino was because of her supporters that had been elected in the office such as some of her cabinet members and other appointed officials who took advantage during that time.
I know she was a great leader and gained the respect of public. Even if I like Marcos, it saddened my heart when I have heard the news that she died. She deserved to be respected by the masses. Her greatest achievement is gaining respect. Lots of public officials could not easily get respect of the people!

Salamat po sa lahat ng kabutihan at sa makabuluhang pamumuno ninyo sa bayan…i still can’t believe Ma’m Cory is no longer with us. laging teary eyed at nagsisikip ang dibdib namin everytime we hear & saw the events that are happening right now. i will teach my kids who she and Sen. Ninoy Aquino Jr were and the values she / they imparted us…the very dark times that the nation has undergone and how our democracy was restored through her valiant leadership.

no need po for state funeral. ang sambayanang Pilipino na ang humusga sa pakikiramay at pakikiisa. it’s 1986 (& 1983) again.

hindi po kayo nag-iisa…tuloy ang laban.

sincere condolences po sa Aquino family.

    I mourned Ninoy’s death.

I voted for Cory in that snap election Marcos called for, stood in EDSA, saw Marcos fly out, voted for Fidel at Cory’s recommends, saw Erap in and out GMA at EDSA and now mourn the demise of Tita Cory.

And at this stage, I finally realize that governance must be for the greater good and not just personal feelings. But the evil lies within us and Tita Cory apparently tried hard to be true.

We just hope that the next generations of Cories will simply put the good of the many ahead of their own personal interests and good. We pray as Cory did.

And hopefully learn from Tita Cory to accept things if they are for the good of all and pray for our enemies.

I came to live in The Philippines just over a year ago from The UK, I have never known what it was like to live under martial law. I can only imagine the joy of getting freedom to say and do whatever you want without the fear of arrest. Cory Aquino must of been a very special person in life to unite a nation like she did and like she has done again with her passing away. It fills me with great emotion to see this, and a sense of pride to witness such an historic event as the passing of a legend. Rest in peace Madam President, and god bless.
