The English Premier League football season is just hours away from kick-off but fans are already facing a mini ”off-the-pitch” crisis.

I am, of course, talking about the sky-rocketing costs of watching your Rooneys and Gerrards play week in, week out.

This exact debate raged on in coffee-shops all across the island during the off-season – should fans have to pay extra on top of what they are already paying to watch their heroes perform?

You see, from this season onwards, fans will have to fork out even more to watch football’s elite clash in the Champions League on SingTel mio TV. That’s on top of the usual Sports Group package to watch the English Premier League (EPL) on Starhub.

It will cost more for fans to watch EPL and Champions League football on tv (AP Photo).

It will cost more for fans to watch EPL and Champions League football on TV (AP Photo).

How much more?

I remember shelling out a monthly subscription of $15 for the Sports Group in 2007 to watch both the EPL and Champions League matches on Starhub.  Soon after, that was increased to $26.75 per month.

Now, with SingTel grabbing a huge slice of the football pie, watching the Champions League on mio TV will cost an additional $15.90 a month. Not to mention the inconvenience of an extra set-top box and more wiring than my living room can handle.

Fans will have to pay more to watch their favourite team play

Will Liverpool fans pay more to watch the Reds play on TV?

I find myself wondering when enough is enough.

As a hard-core Liverpool and football addict, I’m dying to see if the likes of Italian midfielder Alberto Aquilani, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard can prevent Man U winning their 19th league title on Starhub. But is it worth an extra $15.90 per month to watch them play in Europe as well? If  so, I’d have to pay a total of $42.65 each month. Or $511.80 over 12 months, at the very least.

With the EPL broadcast rights up for another bidding exercise at the end of the season, who’s to say prices won’t increase even more next season?

And with 2010 being a World Cup year, I’m pretty sure a World Cup “package” is already being planned. And that’s just the EPL and the World Cup. Will it be a matter of time before I have to pay more to watch the Ronaldos and Alonsos play in La Liga? And what about the Serie A?

A good friend of mine, Wesley Lewis, 31, a communications manager,  summed it up aptly: “Football has become a money-generating industry. It’s a business now. Everyone wants to have a piece of the pie, and at the end of the day, it’s the fans who suffer.”

Are fans contributing to the huge transfer fees paid for players like Cristiano Ronaldo? (AP Photo)

So I’ve drawn the line and decided to make a stand.

Despite being a Red through and through, I’ve opted not to take up SingTel mioTV and pay more to watch my team play in the Champions League. It just doesn’t make economical sense. I’ll probably have to catch highlights of the matches on the news or rely on other sources for match updates.

I know many fans have also opted to make a stand by not paying more to watch the Champions League, preferring instead to spend the wee hours of the morning at a friend’s place or  at the nearest pub or coffee shop.

What about you? Tell us how you feel about the rising costs of watching football, and whether you will pay more to watch your team play in the Champions League.

i’ve been a red devils fan for 26 yrs now and never have i felt this cheated to watch my beloved team play on TV. These prices that we are paying now are already ridiculous and will only continue to escalate. For this season the fact the i have to pay an additional fee to another telco company to watch the Champions League is absolutely revolting. This is the final straw and i pay an additinal sum to watch the champions league games. I will just catch the news to find out how my team fared the following day.

im definately not getting miotv seeing as how we already have a dvd player, the scv box and computer hooked up to the same outlet…im wondering when the whole thing is going to blow but im thinking at least liverpool, chelsea, man united, and barcelona fans should be able to watch the champs league matches on starhub via goal tv 1 and 2 – although it wont be live. i think i can live with that

I share the same thought as others,i wouldnt fork out extra $ a month to watch the champions league. Not just the cost of the channel but also the set top rental and wiring required.I would prefer to get my updates on the internet.Something must be done to stop this ever rising cost and why the broadcasting rights are given to two different service provider? At the end of the day,we football fans are the one suffering.

    Hi

I was absolutely flabbergasted when i first knew that Singtel MioTv has been given rights to broadcast the Champions League this upcoming season. I am so disgusted by the fact that these service providers are taking us fans for a ride. In fact, i am quite annoyed by the way singtel does it business – first is iphone and now its champion’s league. What are they trying to do? Are they trying to create monopolies in which they have total control over prices and eventually be accounted for the price inflation we see today?

The singapore government always promotes the transparent, fair and free market way of doing business and today, we see Singtel dominating already. Sometimes i wonder why IDA didnt come into the picture to regulate the industry? Is it because Singtel comes part of the government? Is this whole matter transparent and was this justify to us fans? Eventually, the only people who suffers are Us – The Consumers.

To all soccer fans – Please do not subscrible to Mio TV for Champion’s League. We have got to make a stand here and we are definitely no push overs.

Y not let us all boycott this pay and pay thingy? How can we be held hostage by these companies?

    Ion Danker,

I agree with your comments, that’s why I’ve just cancelled my SCV Sports channel on Jul’ 2009. We fans pay more for EPL, but Starhub will never rebate when off-season, instead let you watch golf in most channels, I’ve relieved that I’ve make up my mind to cancel sports channel. Will join Kpd’s ah peks to watch important match instead. $321 annual fees enough to buy 400+ glasses of nice coffees kekeke :)

  • Yuanruo said:

No i will not pay more to watch the CL on mioTV. it has just become ridiculously overpriced!

furthermore,it’s easy to watch highlights for free online and you won’t have to wake up at 3am to watch the match anyway.

  • Din said:

What is $600 a year? You just have to work harder, work a bit more overtime to pay for the rising costs which i tink is justified. Nowadays, you have to pay a sum to have things that you always want.

So dont keep complaining and just pay a mere $40 if u r truly an ardent Kops fan. If u tink u r too poor for $40, shut your crap n juz be a cheapskate and hang around ur buddies place everytime the KOP plays.

As a KOP fan, i’m very sure you want them to win the league and how by bringing quality palyers to anfield. How can they do that? They must use cash to lure them…how they get cash? It;s up to common people like us to support them. I hope you get the rationale of the rising costs.

  • Andy Lim said:

Any more price hike I will give up watching football altogether, Gerald or Gerald. Just cannot afford it.Already it is so expensive. I think we are paying more here than some countries. Don’t be a sucker, don’t watch football also won’t die.

  • Ken said:

    go go price hike.. :)
anymore price hike and u’ll sure lose more customers!!
i’m a basketball fan and totally cancelled my sports channels few years back because of the stupid hike due to soccer @_@………

    those companies are just crap..

  • Richard said:

I agree totally wtih you that,we soccer fans despite our desire to follow our team (Man U for me !)in the champion league & EPL, we must together now make a stand against unreasonable escalating cost of watching soccer on TV.
When Singtel was allowed into the pay TV business, consumers were promised by the regulating authorities that it will benefit consumers. But this has turn really turn into an antithesis that competition benefits consumers.
So far we have not seem any real benefit but only increased cost and inconveniences for consumers especially soccer fans.
So let all soccer fans make a stand & subscribe to MIO TV for CPL. AS for Starhub, now that we are gettin glesser soccer choices of the amount we have paid, they should reduce or monthly charges for the sports channel. If the cots for EPL increase next season due to any bidding war, I will even stop watching the EPL.

It’s time we all make a stand.

  • Ed said:

Ultimately, can these companies be challenged into justifying the rising costs with transparency? Each time, the “fault” is conveniently placed on the broadcast fee in order to bring these telecasts to Singapore viewers. But, just how much are these broadcast fees (on top of the running cost)?

Take for example, if there’s 250,000 subscribers paying $20/month – that’s a sum of $5,000,000. In a year, that constitutes to $60,000,000. Off-hand, we wouldn’t know about the actual overheads. How much of these made up the actual profits of the companies? I am not against them making profits… every company has to. However, a company can be making 30% profit, 50% profit, 200% profit, 250% profit so on so forth. At the rate of its increase, I can only assume (from the lack of transparency) that their profit margins should be relatively high.

The major players in Singapore are limiting the choices of the viewers instead of adding more values. We are pretty much cornered because nobody truly looked into the game of monopoly here.

And why pay senselessly when there are free streaming online nowadays?

  • Jay said:

    It’s a simple supply-demand motivation for Singtel & Starhub.
If demand (aka customers) goes down, what choice do they have but to bring it down?

Let’s not be wimps & whine about the situation while paying for these exorbitant prices. Take a stand. Send a message to $ingtel & $tarhub.

If the bulk of us stopped subscription for a couple of months, what do you think they’ll do? Think about it.

I play the beautiful game between hectic work schedules & have my own fav teams. But I’ve not subscribed to the sports channels cos I find the cost too high. I don’t mind spending the money at a cafe with friends to enjoy a really good game.

It’s not so much about spending money; it’s realising that we have means of controlling the costs that we complain about.

  • James Tan said:

It is ludicrous that we have to pay for the lifestyle of footballers who are paid at least 30,000 pounds a week at the lowest scale of EPL professionals plying their trade which is the equivalence of a year’s wage for the average Singaporean executive.

Exorbitant, insane bidding for prized asset like Cristiano Ronaldo or Ribery, fuelled by the deep pockets of Chelsea or Manchester City, means that cost in the footballing entertainment will continue to spiral.

I remember the days when EPL/Serie A or the Bundesliga were available on free-to-air Channel 5 in the 80s, albeit on a week’s worth of delay.

Hence, we need to make our stand. I will also not be subscribing to the Champion’s League. If need be, I would also pay to watch some games online, since we can catch some of these action easily on the web these days.

I think it is not affected by this island only but the whole world as this EPL thing is so demanding

  • Tas said:

The fact is… The cost of watching soccer on TV will only increase. I doubt there is any reason for the price to drop. Neither the economical crisis or the H1N1 can stop this craze.

P.S. I guess, it will help if either SingTel or StarHub gives in and let the other party have the rights to both channels. Given the fact it is a money-generating industry, you wait…

  • TK said:

Yes, I agree. No point paying so much more for the Champions League. Why pay more to watch the Champions League and to force ourselves waking up in the middle of the night and behave like zombies in the morning.
I’ll stop watching the EPL as well should the price rise again for Starhub cable.

  • choy said:

I will give up watching football altogether if the price goes up again next season!! I actually give up cable tv for 2 months totally when last season ended & found out that is not the end of the world actually!! Infact i got to sleep early too!! Well, if singtel got the rights next season i might switch but that depends on the price first of course!

  • Hussein said:

I agree..although i think both sngtel and starhub should carry both leagues so that prices can be mre competitive..the coffeeshops and the pubs showing will be pack than ever..screw them money-generating machines..they killing the beauty of football…

  • Alan said:

Watching football is no doubt enjoyable. But paying these amounts to starhub and singtel is definitely not worth it. Let us all stand cohesively against these money suckers.

  • Alvin said:

It was $15.90 in 2007 and soon it was raised to $26.75 the following year. I cried and screamed about this increased but eventually, I gave up as I enjoyed watching live soccer game with a little bet on my favourite team. Furthermore, as Champions League games were telecast at a different time slot, I am also able to catch them live at one price of $26.75.

And now 2009!, we have to pay for $26.75 and $15.90 (total of $42.65) for Starhub and Singtel respectively, in order to enjoy both EPL and Champions League game. I will definitely give up Champions League game because it only shown in the wee hour. Think of it, it will save money and encourage me to have better rest in the night. Why not…
Anyway, Champions League only play twice in month, ie I will be paying $7.95 for each game…
If I am so desperate to watch any of the match, I can leave with watching near-live game online..

I think Singtel will be worst off by snatching Champions League broadcast rights from Starhub, until they can successfully obtain rights for the rest of EPL, SPL and GBL rights from Starhub.

Back to Starhub… should Starhub consider to reduce the subscription of $26.75 for the sports group, since they have a substantial amount of money by losing the rights to Singtel?
Well, Starhub may says that they have allocated more channels to offer more live EPL games showing at the same time. So what? Are they expecting me to switch the channels back and forth?

    Well, that is my stand…
    - Stick to one
    - Pay less
    - Have a better night sleep during weekdays

  • soccer die hard said:

I will definitely not having another set-top box just to watch the champions League. Why should I pay so much just to watch the matches.
Now alone, having Starhub sport channel already cost me $26.75 every month (Not worth it).Compare to previous fees, which is $8 to $15.

Last, should Starhub consider to reduse the monthly fees for Sport Channel? Since there are not much soccer matches broadcast over cable. Only the BPL now (The last season for Starhub to have the rights). I have the plan not to continue to subscribe the current Sport Channel, Should Starhub not reducing the subscription fees.

  • Boon said:

Most of us will agree that if it is just a 3-5 S$ increase to watch Champions League, we will pay. But, to sign a new contract with another provider, get a new box and pay so much more, most will not sign up!

Let hope the take up rate is so low that Singtel will give up next year, or they will fight for the whole package instead of separating the different tournaments.

It’s a winner takes all attitude. Either Singtel or Starhub or any other provider. Otherwise, the provider without EPL will most likely suffer.

Ya ! I totally agreed with the above written comments. It does not justify to pay additonal of $15.90 to subscribe to Mio just to watch Champions League games. Worst still, if your favourite team didn’t make it to the quater final rounds, what then ?
It will be a matter of time whereby watching football is a luxury and only for the previleged, NOT for the love of sports !!!
It’s now all about money, it’s too commercialised for money making !
I am and have already made my stand not to pay additonally just to watch champion League even though I might not be able to sleep during those match games. Sorry !

Well, somebody has to pay for the gazillions in transfer fees and weekly wages. I’ll not be surprised if soccer becomes Pay-Per-View in 5 years time. Its already happened for cricket.

And if you’re waiting for highlights from the news, too bad. They’ll only show the results, tables and maybe if we’re lucky, a couple of still photos. Thats it.

I’ve resigned myself to following my favourite Red Devils on the internet. At least, its less sinful than having to put aside money that must surely be needed elsewhere in the family.

  • John Sung said:

Yes, why we consumers are always the ones to suffer for the bidding wars between Singtel and Starhub.

I thought Starhub should in fact lower their charges since they have something less to offer than before (no more Champions league). If a set meal costs $x, and the same set meal now doesn’t come with soup, should it not be cheaper?? But I guess this analogy doesn’t work in a “monopolised” market….you don’t want the set meal, you go hungry…as simple as that.

I won’t be surprised to see more and more die hard soccer fans opt out of the Singtel/Starhub “offers” and look for other “avenues” just to continue watching their Rooneys and Gerrards.

RTS or SBC, was the national broadcaster back then. Saturday nites were almost reservd for 1 and half hours of live telecast football. No need to pay any single cent except the annual TV license fee.

Since then, watching soccer at home is now a premium and one has to pay an arm and a leg. Me then stop watching it. At first, there were withdrawal symptoms but gradually, I managed to stop watching it.

But if wanna watch good derby matches or favourite team matches, then me just plonked downstairs to the neighbourhood coffee shop in my khaki shorts and T-shirt to watch it.

Cost moi only 80cents for a cuppa just to watch a EPL match now. Somemore, sometimes got side-entertainment like Lampert can be called “Lampxx” in hokkien when he misses an easy shot at goal. Michael Owen is also known as microwave oven and Middlesborough as meelopok!

Join the rest and watch it together at the kopitiam. Cheap and good. It’s as simple as that.

I’m already paying StarHub for the Sports Group. No way am I shelling out more for SingTel, even though I’m a big fan of La Liga way before C. Ronaldo appeared. But we have to make a stand. There were many who had already stopped subscribing Starhub’s sports channels when the initial hike in fee was implemented. I can’t imagine I’m still paying the $27 each month now considering Starhub doesn’t even carry the Champions League, the biggest club football tournament in Europe or even the world. And I can’t just switch to SingTel because of UCL as I still watch other Starhub channels. So as far as I’m concerned, no I’m not subscribing to MioTV. I am a Reds supporter. I have gave up my SCV the moment they increased the price (which is I think 2 seasons ago). I watch at coffee shops, pubs, friends’ place although I really preferred the comfort of my home. It’s just don make economical senses. Also, there are too many “so called” previews/reviews by too many “commentators & guests” which you would have to pay them! The root cause is the broadcast prices which I m no surprise; a football “stars” get paid easily 60K pounds weekly while some get more than 100K pounds per week. It just doesn’t make sense. In my opinion, this sooner or later will kill the beautiful game. If you watch those football back in the 50s 60s 70s 80s, their skill are not much of a difference but their wages, is really going out of hands. Watching football should not be so expensive, just pray that it would go down someday (when FIFA or whoever fix a wage limit on players & managers). This day will come…
    God bless

The power should be with the consumers. If we could rally around ten thousand current subscribers to cancel at one time, it should prompt them to seriously think of increasing the price. It is for the greater good and for the near future. ( World Cup next year)
Right now, when Singtel and Starhub go for bidding, they simply do not care about the cost since it will eventually pass on to the consumers.
If we boycott them, it will change the business scenerio and force these two service providers to collaborate instead of compete. Let’s just boycott.

I think we should all together stop subscribe, without many supporter support the system. Whether is it Starhub or Singtel, they will begin to feel the pain of not enough supporter and they will lower the fees to increase the viewership as they need to cover back the cost. But its hard to gather the whole Singapore to cancel their subscription. If we are able to do this, i believe the price will drop instead of rise.

It is the fans who suffered most when it come to costs of watching soccer on TV – EPL, CL or World Cup, or other leagues.

First, i am a hardcore football fan. But for sure im not signing Mio TV for the CL live telescast. Why are we paying to separate providers in the first place? I felt that Starhub should try the best to grab the exclusive rights for CL since most of us have Starhub cable rather than Mio. Why are they allowing their TV rivals to clinch it? Don’t make any business sense to me.. Personally i feel that this is more like a conspiracy therory.. I won’t definitely not subcribe Mio just for CL c’os by doing so, i would need to pay so much more additionals every month..
If Starhub would to increase the fees on their Sports channel again, i have the thoughts to cancel it as well. I would rather save the money every month and use it somewhere else.

    Hi Soccer Fans in Singapore

I have reach point where enough is enough. Years back, we used to pay nothing for EPL matches and increases to $26.75 per month last year. Not forgetting we still have to pay the basic package subcribe and box rental to Starhub just to catch our craving for EPL matches.

If we have to subcribe to Mio for Champion Leagues matches, it only a matter weof time we have to pay more money to watch the La liga.

If we were to subcribe both services, it total up to maore than $100.00 a month just to watch a sport. Soccer is a game that bring thousands of fans together not becoming wage slaves for people that turn a sport into comercial revenues.

  • Doreen said:

I’m a Liverpool fan as well but definitely won’t be paying extra for setting up another box just to watch champions league. Last time Starhub says they increase price due to the football rights. Now that they have lost the rights to show champions league, shouldn’t they lower their price too? I think its getting all too out of control. MDA should control the prices and not let us be the suckers.

The pools, the team managers etc., they all knew where the heavier bets went to right before the whistle blew-off, and they have ways to tell their teams “How to Play” to make sured the ball games looked as real as they can be to the fans & punters. I figured it out that’s why all the teams are training so hard everyday – to make sure they can coordinate seamlessly & perform according to the Bookmakers’ orders for the day…

    2) Match tickets sales & Soccer Cable-TVs.

So folks, now you all knew what sux you. Its not what sux that makes a sucker, its those who knew what sux them but chosen to live with it and yet gripping about it, sux…

A simple collaboration between the 2 would have ended with a win-win-win situation.

In fact, if we continue to choose between Singtel and Starhub, we are doing nothing except encourage the 2 to increase their prices further. The best is not to subscribe to any of them, the message has to be louder then that.

Football in Singapore has become more of a money-generating industry rather than a way of life like it is in Europe. There the fans are treated with respect not only by the club itself but by the broadcasting stations because they both know they need us fans to survive.

It’s pathetic really, the way they’re making us pay more. They know nothing about football, everything about making the extra buck.

I think it’s really ridiculous that the broadcasting have to be divided by two different providers. it doesn’t make any sense at all. besides, i am not very comfortable with mio having had bad experience with it.

we are being charged way too much already for football and now this? i might as well just terminate everything if i am paying the same amount as i did last season but being provided with less games this season. when a gazillion people terminate theirs cable services, let’s see then what the providers will do. will they revert to the original or come up with sth that will make the fans and the people who make the providers rich (us) happy?

is it very hard to get both providers to show the same thing? let the fans pick which provider they are more comfortable in.wouldn’t everyone benefit then?

  • Delvin said:

Ransom. Thats what it is. Whether the providers like the usage of the term or not, is irrelevant. Their stance is repulsive:’Pay up, or lose out’. All football fans in Singapore are being held to ransom.

What i cannot comprehend is the explanation given by Starhub on the refusal to reduce its football package price: ‘We now offer more football channels’. Who cares? What i want to watch is purely EPL games. So what if their coverage increases from La Liga to Seria A to Zimbabwe National Womens League? What everyone wants is to watch the Big 4 battle it out for supremacy.

Thus, give me solely EPL matches, and minus all the other redundant channels. The audacity to charge the same price without Champions League football is hilarious. Are they trying to say the other useless channels are equivalent to Champions League football? I dare their spokesman to make that statement. Thus, the bottom line is simple: No champions league, equals cheaper price.

I have taken a very simple stance: I won’t be held to ransom, and the only way not to do so is to catch the highlights until someone decides to be reasonable in the pricing.

replay of football matches that is worst than channel 8 chinese drama

Lets stop paying and watching and they will beg us to give us watch free.

  • Jaston said:

Isn’t it better if fans gather together and watch ‘LIVE’ matches in coffee shops or some entertainment centres? I enjoyed doing this every weekend.

The increase in cost will surely sent some people resort to illegal taping of channels as people would be reluctant to pay more. If I were the service provider, I would rather make less profit to retain my current customers than to make up the cost of subscription and in the end loose tons of customers. WIll it result in lost of profit for Singtel or starhub? Nobody knows for now.

Early this year when starhub remove their pay tv packages and turn everything into al la carte, its a move to increase customers monthly subscription. If there is anymore price increase I’m going to have to terminate the pay and pay tv.

  • warren said:

I’ll give up sports group if the price is increased.
i don’t watch that much soccer, so i will not pay for the increase.

I advise Starhub or SingTel to separate the football channels from other sports channels. They should create a package just for football and another package for all the other sports.

It is the same as the transport system. Like the SMRT and SBS, they increased the fares with the excuses of fuel hikes and the installation of mobile TV and EZ-link system. Pay more for convenient sake.

Singtel and Starhub increase subscription fees just because now it costs more for the broadcasting rights. Why can’t companies absorb the extra expenses to retain customers and have happy customers. Surely these companies still make profit monthly right?

Can someone just convince me why are all these things happening??? Is the living standard in Singapore going to be unbearable for SIngaporeans?

As usual, the price hike issue is a never ending story. No way m i going to pay more and sign on mio tvs. It is not a matter of not supporting, but to be fair, to pay so much and at the same time, sacrifice our sleeping time just does not make any more sense. May force myself to stop watching football totally if this price hiking continues. If only all football fans can stand together and start to boycott both telcos services, I will be pleased….

I will just watch UCL live on my PC.

Starhub offers a more comprehensive package and convenience for EPL and Euro action on TV and on Mobile. Champions league can be watched on delay telecast on Goal TV. Nowadays, with the HD recorder and more enhanced channels, you won’t miss any game. Moreover, there’s free to watch soccer games in the internet. Just search the web and you’ll find. Don’t be sad….there’s always a way if you bother to find. Cheers

This is not making any sense… all these bidding wars on TV rights… is this not a way to promote monopoly?? So what if the winning bidder gets the rights at a high price? The costs will just be pushed down to the consumers… When SingTel launched cable TV services we all thought that the presence of competition would keep the prices competitive.. seems like it’s wrong.. I see no end to this unless bidding of TV rights is abolished altogether and the broadcasters just sell broadcasting rights to multiple companies instead of auctioning single rights… and yah.. I will not be taking up the Champions League and I may even quit watching football altogether if this goes on…

i thought competition is supposed to promote good and fair pricing to the consumers but instead, looked at what happened? i missed the good old times when epl and world cup was shown on channel 5, now u can’t even get highlights of it….

  • Alfred said:

I’m also concerned about the price of watching football nowadays.
I do not understand the rationale of bidding war for a small market likes S’pore.
Why can’t one party just bid and then share the screening rights with the rest. Let the public decide which service provider they want to use. After all what was wrong with the original concept when ESPN won the right but showed through Starhub and even Mediacorp in some case like Champs Lge.
Now we have Singtel joining in. At a time when Temasek Hldgs is losing money we a Temasek co which I believe is going to bidd sky high just to get the rights regardless of whether there’s a porper platform to show the matches. Why waste all that money. Stick to your Singtel grid girls.

In terms of making a stand I have opted to cancel the starhub sports group after the end of the last season and so far I didn’t feel tempted to re-sign given the ridiculous development in price hikes. Let the service providers knock at our doors with offers instead of the fan running after the BPL and Champions League. I can only agree with the rest of the guys that it will be much more fun to watch the games at the neighborhood kopitiam.

I did cancel my sport channel in starhub. better to watch in kopitiam, sometimes better to follow directly from the net. cheap, fast and live.

I think that the current rate for watching soccer in Singapore is reasonable and in fact much cheaper compared to what the Europeans are footing and compared to many developed countries.

I do not agree that we should compare the rates to developing countries because the standard of living is totally different.

I look forward to pay per match basis. I used to watch from 1900 to 0530 in the past. Nowadays I am more focused and wish the authorities could look into this flexibility for viewers like me who are very focused.

I will not condone anymore price hike for sports. Fans is always being at the mercy of service providers. That is because we are not united enough to make our stand to them. A lot will complain but the end of the day they will still pay and being subdued to their demands. Unless there is a national boycott of ALL/MAJORITY sports fans, I doubt the few of us will help. Anyway for me EPL is enough as I wun hav the time to watch the Champions League since mostly were played in the wee hours.

Don’t bother to tink that the authority will step in on this crazy money pie struggle as they will always say the same thing. Open competition.

  • Andrew said:

People, we are at the ends of unnecessary price hikings.

So, what will we have to pay by 2020 to watch a simple BPL match, $200!??
And that might be possible even!
For all this corporate industries who are greedy for money, we, the fans end up suffering.
We have to put a fullstop to this, simply boycott singtel, and in doing so, that will be a message to starhub to watch their prices.
We have to stop this ridicule.

I am glad that there are many fans out there have the same thought. Both Starhub n Singtel knows well how many subscribles are available in the little “red dot” and yet they tried to outbid each other. Is it our problem that they can’t make $? Go n find more sponsorship lor. Or better still, buy over another country TV station so tat can access to bigger market share, like Singtel does in so many countries (telco) already. Thought we suppose to go regional???

I won’t be signing up for Singtel mioTV and once Starhub increase their price, I will also join the rest at Kopithiam. More bidders suppose to benefit consumer but it seem in S’pore this is again a special situation where u don find them anywhere in the world that consumer need to pay more instead of less.

Can u guys still remember the last European Cup where all of us got to foot some $ to pay to watch n Starhub was the authorize boardcaster? Even at the eve of the 1 month programme which Starhub offer at a minimum sum, I can’t be bother to take up. So if this time round for the world cup again need to pay, just pay for a cup of kopi, tea but not me.

  • Joe said:

    Jaston,

I can tell you why both the telcos are still continuing doing this, that’s because there are still enough of us subscribing to them. Its simple math really, they raise the price by 100% and in the event will lose 30, 40% of their customers, there will still be surplus. So if I am the telco, you know what I will do?,……. increase the price again next season.

  • Edward said:

This is real stupid. Internally 2 companies compete to pay more to foreigner countries at the expense of Singaporean. This is the most creative leakage of modern times. CAN THE GOVERNMENT DO SOME THINKING PLEASE.

  • Alex said:

I think it’s absurd the fans have to fork out that much more to catch football live again this season. Who said competition would give us better deals out to be shot!

Quite honestly, it just reflects Singapore’s inability, as well as that of her telco companies, to manage well and efficiently for the benefit of the consumer! A while ago, many said the lack of competition didn’t give the consumers the best results and now with competition in the market, it isn’t doing any much better.

However, I think it’s a trend that starting to kick-in in cable TV. Just like how they at first had HBO and star movies just for movies and now they’ve included a demand TV for you to catch shows and to fork out even more cash to watch the same movies! I think it’s absurd and it’s time the consumers made a stand! It’s a the recession for crying out loud!

Why let Singtel and Starhub earn our money so real easy?

  • Sx said:

I wouldn’t worry too much though. Monthly costs to watch soccer are still barely bearable, because ppl choose to watch EPL, and give up the Champions League altogether.

If the costs are really up to the point(maybe another increase in price) that the majority feels its unbearable, then it is an opporturnity for a cheaper alternative to enter the market and grab their share of the profits. Internet TV maybe? or another competitor?

We can only hope that the government relax their rules to let these cheaper alternatives enter the market.

Plus they look with green-eyes how Singapore Pools and bookies make millions from some punters, and they say to themselves, “Hey we want a piece of the pie as well. The reasons given out are really to be laughed at and is no more different than reasons given by the ex-US president.

  • bleeding man utd fan said:

Complain all we like, but in reality EPL have been a profit generating engine for the service providers.
And in all business, the model is the same, generating as much profit as it can during its cash cow period. The only factor that drives EPL into today Cash Cow is that top clubs are struggling to cope with overpriced players that like to perform a fancy step over with a size 5, and demanding fans are thrill watching them in the team colors performing the fancy step over with that size 5. The only way clubs to manage their balance sheet is to sell their rights, rights like jersey, branding, advertisement, and broadcasting, recently witnessed more clubs are even offering a complete take over. Even their local Die Hard fans are slap Up Down Left Right with an average of 12% increase in ticket price.

Boycotting offer little options for current subscribers whom most naively sold their soul to the devil for the 39” or that 4BG P4 without even noticing that the service providers have silently adopt the same principle as the GST credit payout, and then kick you where the sun dun shine once you ink that wobbly worms on the black and white with tons of tiny prints. Unless the subscription hike up another 5-10 folds only then people will start to feel the pinch down south, otherwise you and me will still conveniently lift that remote with the left and that Heineken with your right, occasionally you have to endure the frustration of defining offside rules with that remote and the empty beer cans.

Bare in mind those commercial establishments are paying higher subscription then residential estate. If you do your math, it will not be economical viable by patronizing those commercial establishments and cancelling your subscription. Ultimately service providers will have to make up the lost revenues by transferring to someone else and this deadly cycle will definitely reach you at the end of the line as with a long throw in. Service provider or commercial establishment, their business model is the same, that is to fly at you with that gongfu kick when ever there a chance.

So I have started been nicer to my neighbor who is a loser-fool fan, for who knows our service providers might come up with a buddy buddy plan and we two might even share a subscription one day.

    A bleeding Man Utd Fan.

In China, maybe you just need to pay a dollar and it will be enough to pay the TV right due to the huge population. If it happen to every where, then all the fans in the world should be able to boycott the EPL. We are the one that make Ronaldo so super rich by just playing football.

I think the best way to tackle this is stay away from both cable networks. starhub has not reduced its price either (now, it’s not providing champions league).

Listen to match coverage on radio and updates on the news and net. If enough people do it I think some sense will prevail.

Maybe I will stick with pay per view online or something for the bigger matches… better start looking.. Or season ticket highlights via liverpool.fc :\

Why is StarHub not taking any action in reducing the cost of sports channel subscription, now that Singtel is the broadcaster for the Champions League matches? As our existing StarHub package includes Champions League, is StarHub taking any action to reduce the price? Do customers have to request for a reduction? We speak of GEMS, so where is the service?

Its pay and pay in Singapore. Everything keeps increasing as and when they like. The reason used is simply due to the rising cost. They may claim that they have reduced here and there, but that is miniscule compared to the rise. I am just guessing that whoever it is may have simply taken the psychological framework of Singaporeans into consideration. Its simply a form of getting people to be addicted, and then raise the prices. Although we will complain initially, they know that we will still indulge in it due to our addiction, and that the matter will soon be forgotten, till the next price hike. If this maybe the case then let them not take advantage of our weakness. Let us all rise and “boycott”.

I have already decided to boycott. With people power, the telcos will have no choice but to stand up and take notice, that the very fans who support them have to be counted.

As for all matters instead of just saying we have to increase prices as a result of rising cost, its about time creativity and innovation is taken to the next level, in order to maintain customer loyalty, and to reduce the burden of the consumers. After all a company should not take the easy way out by simply increasing prices in order to show a healthy profit at the expense of consumers.

I don’t really mind the price increase. Having been stationed in Europe and other developed countries like US and Japan – the costs is still comparable. We have to keep in mind that Singapore is already a developed country at the forefront of global economic growth.

What irks me is the move made by SingTel. It is extremely inconvenient to get another service that requires additional hardware. Like most, I would rather not watch Champions League football. I am sorry to rain on SingTel’s parade but it is ultimately going to fail. If SingTel thinks that this can get them a healthy slice of the football viewership base in Singapore and thus boost mioTV’s business – nope I don’t think so.

The move from ESPN and Star Sports to Football Channel (Starhub) for BPL was easy, as it only involves one major decision (to pay or not to pay). There wasn’t any hassle about additional hardware, more bills to manage etc.

I can confidently say that viewership for Champions League football coming from Singapore will be an all-time low this season.

Hopefully, the company that controls the TV rights to Champions League will reconsider handing our local rights to a provider that has a larger viewership base like ESPN, Star Sports or even Starhub.

  • Barmy said:

I will definetely not going to pay extra for champions league matches which are now in the domain of SINGTEL MIO. As we do not know when this recession will last, the very least the corporate sharks running these Telcos can do is be more understanding and offer some kind of recession proof package to tide us football fans over until some other big shot says that the recession is over and then perhaps reconsider the additional cost to charge the fans for watching football.

A little help goes a long way in retaining customers and gaining loyalty and confidence. After all without us,who’s going to pay their salaries? We have the power to say NO and we indeed have the strength to say enough is enough and perhaps take a stand and together “boycott” their services if the hike is far fetched.

Starhub or Singtel can perhaps have an informal brainstorm sessions with fans to get the best ideas on how to allay fee hikes so that way we can all have a win-win situation.

I have cancel my subscription with starhub long ago. In the past, i sign up starhub tv because of the soccer. And worst still, I sign up at the price of $40 over for with a 2 years contract and less than a year, Starhub increase the price of sport channel and rename it as football channel by increasing the price to $26 plus dollar. And the price increase will cost my monthly bill increase too even though my contract is 2 years. I call up starhub and they say that they reserve the right to increase the price at any point of time. After that, I cancel my sport channel and subsequently when my contract end, I cancel my starhub subscription.
Here, I hope that starhub or singtel management people will see the message. Because of the $10 dollar more, you guys end up losing 40 over dollars of subscription fee due to customer cancellation of the service, does it worth? Please think again. I think Singaporean are one of them paying highest subscription in Asia. Please wake up your idea, Telco groups. MDA, are you working to stop this kind of subscription hike? Wake up your idea too, MDA.

I think we should all take into consideration the reasons for the hike and weigh the pros and cons to see which outweighs the other. Personally I have been contemplating to cease my sports channel subscrition and a price hike of any amount will definitely justify my decision. I am for watching EPL at any nearby coffeeshop with my fellow die hard fans rather than fork out increased charges to supplement the income of the Ronaldos,Torresses, Gerrards, Terrys and Rooneys. Mind you these players make in a week what we guys have to slog for 5 to 10 years. So why burden ourselves further?

Everyone, do not let SingTel of StarHub hold us to ransom !!! Just watch football over the Internet ! With today’s fast advancing technologies, the quality of streaming video is much better, ie. significantly less jitter, limited buffering and hence quality of viewing is much, much better (some sites even have 720p or DVD quality streaming). Also, do NOT let any of the telcos. tell you that watching footie online is illegal ! Categorically, it is NOT illegal ! You are not hosting or embedding the videos nor downloading, you are watching STREAMING videos !!! If anyone tells you that watching streaming videos is illegal, then you can tell them that in that case watching YouTube is therefore illegal too. So, just have a proper broadband connection (4 mbps and above is normally sufficient, but I use 10 Mbps), and you will kill 2 birds with 1 stone – pay for unlimited broadband and also watch your favourite footie matches LIVE, and you don’t have to subscribe to either SingTel nor StarHub – problem solved !

I live in the States but I am back home in Singapore visiting my mum and her cable bill in general is unbelievable. In the US, we are paying US$90 for high speed internet, Phone and TV with over 300 channels, including 6 sports channels which show Football from the Italian, German, Spanish and of course the Premiership.

We get all the knockout competitions from those leagues as well as the European competitions. Why are prices so competitive? Because my cable company is not the only choice in my area. They have to compete to keep business. I have been with them for 3 years now and I am paying the same price since the day I started service.

Singtel Mio is no threat to Starhub because their programing is so sparse. There needs to be a more viable alternative to Starhub and then we will see prices reflect a more fair market. As long as there is a monopoly, we the customer will always lose. There is no competition to keep the product fresh. Starhub is not compelled to keep its content fresh and prices within reason.

I wish that Satellite TV would be an option in Singapore, but the government would not be able to regulate it as easily, hence its unlikely that we will see it anytime soon. Still, that would give Cable a good run for its money and we the customer will benefit with added options for our money.

One can actually make do without the luxury of cable tv. If you’re a hardcore supporter, the most convenient choice is to watch at your local kopitiam; call some of your buddies and it could well be almost as atmospheric as that watching at the stadium. Ok, maybe ‘almost’ is quite exaggerating but its fun anyway since there will be others watching as well.

But it is upsetting that cable tv companies are on board along with many others to the heights of capitalism. Ofcourse a business is to make profit but to be greedy? No matter what, someone has to pay cause “they” still want their profits irregardless of the economic downturn.

The future will see to it that even middle income workers/families can on longer afford cable tv. Mark my words. =)

Its daylight robbery and nothing we could do unless we stop watching EPL football. Who knows that 1 day we will be paying 100 SGD a month just to watch 22 men chasing 1 ball.

Singtel and Starhub are all the same.

Bro for Kopitiam its ok and soon there are no more free live game as Free stuff wont last long. Starhub and Singtel will say ” Pay 30 SGD 100 people watch lor looooooooooose money must stop this”

  • Stanley said:

It will be difficult if Starhub were to be given exclusivity for EPL. Well guys….. that may mean we have to pay more to watch football and it will get more expensive every year.

We certainly cannot compare with the European countries in term of rate due to different tax and income structure. For those who can afford wil not feel the pinch but for some it will be painful to part with more money.

For those, who have been watching EPL and Champion League for many years may find it difficult to say “I give up watching football” is liken to saying to words to your girlfriend “I miss you but I do not want to see you”

Already so many prices of things is on the rise and with it, our blood pressure and when we look forward to wind down every weekend and watch a passionate game of football…guess what? Our blood pressure shoots up again!!!

What the hell is going on when even to watch a game so beautiful can burn a hole in our pockets. And is there an end to this? I think not!

If passion is going to cost so much, I’d rather do without it! So long Giggs,Gerrard,Fabregas,Lampard and the rest of BPL heroes. We have to part ways just because some ppl at the top think they can play us like a marionette.

  • mysticancer said:

i guess they forgot we can watch live on internet too or read live commentary though live commentary is alittle slow. may not be as exciting as watching live on tv but its not a problem for me. like you guys have said, watch soccer in coffeeshops and its a matter of time coffeeshops have to increase the sitting capacity and maybe increase the price of drinks. but i guess its still affordable for drinks in coffeeshops unlike any entertainment places. i will also opt out for sure if price increase.

tis is absolute bullshit!!! we shld boycott watching champion league n let them noe no one will fork out e extra $$$ to watch it n serve as a warning to starhub oso

  • AS said:

For all the fans who have taken the painful decision to forsake our football to boycott both starthub & singtel, i suggest we should do it together.
    1) We could organise a date, gather ourselves @starhub center to cancel our sports channel. Media should be inform & the damn govt idiot who promise s’porean better value (with additional license for another cables service provider) should resign in shame. Our govt agency really need to start taking more responsibility & accountability to s’porean.
    2) Or perhaps some tech savvy brother could help set up an online petition or sorts. All fans who wants to participate in this boycott excercise could combine & sent in our cancellation at one go.

Well, football to me is not about life and death. It is more than that! I am keeping my fingers crossed that Singtel win the BPL next year. Then I do not have to pay StarHub for the stupid basic groups. I just watch soccer only. Currently I am taking the free Champions League package with Singtel. If I dun like just return the stuff to them after two months lor. Free just take lor! But I think I will continue to subscribe if Liverpool make it to the quarter finals!

  • Ah lu said:

Yes! It time to stand up for soccer fans.It very bissoff with singtel coming in to bid for the boastcast right on Champion league matches. Why can’t singtel just buy some of the broadcast matches from Starhub, since singtel is promoting their Mio Tv service? As we have stick with Starhub for so many years.Don’t put the charges on us!!!

  • Moe said:

I wun be suscribing to watch the champions league this year. If the price goes up, I wld not subscripe for cable channels anymore. The reason I am subscrining cable TV is becos of EPL. Other than EPL and news, i dun watch anything on TV. I guess i will look for a part time job and start saving my money instead of watching football.

Malaysians get to watch football with no additional cost and they telecast all the game…even meaningless pre-season games, we pay so much but dun get to follow our teams during the pre-season.Well done Malaysia, you never let your viewers walk alone….

seriously speaking , if many people boycott, will their plan actually fail ? i tink the telcos already expected there will be a decrease in subscription, thats why they put the champ league subscription fee so high. Lets say 20% rich ppl subscribe in sg, when they paid for the champ league fee, they are already making up for people who unsubscribed it . In the end, they still will make a profit.Never 4get, there are always the kopitiams and the rich people. no matter how they shake, golden eggs will always come out. hope that they be more considerate and combine together . Mayb in the future, for every match of EPL, 1 match is by starhub , another match is shown by Singtel.

I love soccer very much especially EPL and World Cup but have since cancel my subscription when Starhub increase the price. Although I do not get to watch live but I will surf on the net, read newspaper or watch the news to get the information that I want. I agree very much with all u. We should boycott both Starhub and Mio TV. It is just not worth to pay all these suckers. Their banks are loaded with money while we are penniless. Before without Starhub or Mio TV we still get to watch selected matches for free especially World Cup but now we have to pay n pay n pay. Why are we paying so much when sometime the reception is no good. Do Starhub or Mio TV compensate us when this happen? NO. All they care about is their profit. Do all these providers think that we Singaporeans are stupid and that we will always have to submit to their price increament. BOYCOT BOYCOT BOYCOT WE SINGAPOREANS SHOULD BOYCOT STARHUB AND MIO TV ALL THE WAY.

Bloody daylight robbery if you ask me.

But then, we are to be blamed too because, so many fans pump millions of dollars betting on EPL and CL matches at Singapore Pools and bookies, that now Singtel and Starhub concluded that we are desperate enough to need to watch these matches at all costs, since we already have so much at stake in our bets.

Singtel and Starhub are in collaboration and are simply saying to themselves, “Let us both have a piece of the pie too, and suck blood from those suckers”.

So stop complaining folks for you brought this on yourselves.

  • victor said:

Why bother to pay and watch since we already know the final outcome of this season’s EPL and CL?

EPL title will go to Liverpool and CL winner will be Barcelona again.

So don’t waste your time and money since all else that happens till the end of the season will be just play acting or as we say in Singapore..’wayang’.

And if you must bet…go for these two, then switch off Starhub and Singtel and happily collect your money at the end of the season.

  • Paul said:

In the first place, why did the government allow singtel to have their own cable tv line?? All such companies in singapore are government linked or government owned, so without singtel in the cable tv market, starhub would not be out bidded for the rights to the champs league in the first place..
Its a question of ethics and shows that these companies have no ethical practices as all they want to do is fleece as much money from customers.
I would rather watch laggy p2p free channels or even pay per view on the net than to keep starhub and singtel’s profits up! As many have suggested, we should make them come begging to us

  • Edmund said:

I’m suggesting to everyone of us, irregardless of which teams we are supporting, which are our favourite players, we should cancel all football subscription if the price increase again. When the fans are not subscribing, Starhub and Singtel for sure will have no choice but to reduce the price to attract us to subscribe. It’s a matter of supply and demand.

Also, there are ways to watch it ‘live’ in internet. I’m aware of the club’s website offering ‘live’ for matches involving the respective club and overall it’s cheaper to watch this way although one can only watch that particular club.

Be it Starhub or Singtel, they can’t simply use us who are sports fans’ to keep taking advantage of us. Our passions for sports seem to be advantage to them in generating profits.

Else, i’ll pass on champions league soccer and catch up later when my favourite team moves into the semis and finals.

  • Joe said:

  • Ben said:

As football fans in Singapore, we need to make a stand. This silly bidding war has to stop. For me there is one clear decision, the latecomer MIO should not be allowed to cause our rising costs of watching football. One content provider MUST die and for me that is MIO. I hope they keep splurging on advertising to promote MIO because that will hasten its demise. I will NOT subscribe to MIO – not even be baited by its “free” European football offered now as it will continue into a pay version and it will be a hassle terminating it then. European action happens early in the morning – there are not that many and not all are worth catching anyway. Let’s go to pubs or other places that are prepared to allow us to watch for the cost of 1-2 drinks. We need to make sure that only one cable provider of football survives in Singapore. That will teach anyone else thinking of splitting up the rights. As for ESPN, I wish they would come back and provide the EPL telecasts. Morrison of Football Channel sucks.

  • Haslan said:

Heard that the MIO TV telecast will be under ESPN.. so, whats the diff in giving everything to 1 telco? I think, the only option now for football fans who wants to watch champions league is to invest in a good satelite disc for free telecast on indonesian channel. My uncle who lives in a private housing enjoy this setup since the 1st year of cable tv. I think, i will enjoy the 2 mths free MIO TV subscription and then return it back, after that, i will invest on a good satelite disc to enjoy champions league.

Just wonder what will happen next year if Singtel wins the BPL and Starhub still gets the FA Cup and the Charity Shield plus the World Cup. Someone has to stop this!

See if Mio will want to “kao kao zan” next year.
Mio might not be able the justification to outbid Starhub next year for the BPL as their subscribers base is low, the cost spread out will be much higher to break even and for one many like me WILL NOT

Hmm, s’pore soccer become so exp is because of the singtel coming for the pie of cake. Why can’t singtel and star hub have an agreement that star hub take up soccer channel and sing tel take out other sport packages. And so do the tcs is another company who cause all this mess. I remember it was use to be tcs telecast the sport channel and we will be able to watch the highlight and one of the live match on weekend when i was a small kid. Now tcs have take away the channel and promise us to telecast live sport on special event. All these are lies tcs is a sucker, even s’pore natonal team playing they did not telecast too and when they wan to telecast. their will be problem as channel 5 there are ppl wan to watch their prime time show. Tcs is one of the main company who cause this.

Lastly i will stop pay for the soccer channel on next yr if the price increase again. I mean i pay so much , how many matches can i watch if they play al lthe 10 matches at the same time, i only watch one matches. don’t lie to us by saying we pay this little amount and can watch 10 live match unless i have 20 tv set with the deck box.. we should stop watch soccer and even all the fan in the wrold so that that top player will not earn so much fr our hard earn pocket money and they are not loyal to club at this time. soccer we should stop paying and watching instead we tune in to local and cost less

Competition is supposed to be good for the consumers and reduce cost. However, in this case, both competitors monopolize their own market segment and strangle consumers with ever increasing cost, inconvenience and irritation. This is the opposite of what consumers should endure and is surely not something the regulators had in mind when they opened up the market to more competition than only SCV.

While in European countries the charges of pay per view/match may be higher than here, this can not really be compared to the Singapore situation where many people have only ever known the situation here and seen there cost go up way more than normal, reasonable annual increases.

The viewership charges are even more expensive than some developed countries!

To Singtel and Starhub, you guys can take advantage by profiteering for the moment but you have just lost another customer and many that will follow. You are making this past time out of reach to the common Singaporean and it is becoming only affordable to the elites who live here. Thanks!

Yes, we wish that the authorities would step in but i think that they can’t do anything about it. This is like a stall selling $100 for a plate of chicken rice vs $3.50 from another stall. Some could say it’s expensive but consumers could choose not to buy. I don’t see how the authorities could see how much is too much.

The only way to signal to these telcos is to not subscribing to the channels.

Got really disgusted when starhub started raising their prices and also charging extras to watch “premium” competitions.

Should i really need to catch a match.. i’ll just walk down to the kopitiam where a match could be more interesting with all the apek’s reactions and antics..

Boycott the telcos?? i think we need to boycott the epl as well… it’s all down to our weakness for it that crazy money is being traded in football…

To me … football has kind of lost its direction with greed…

  • Maman said:

Well, it is ironic isn’t it that as the players cost more on the market, the cost of us watching them on tv will be more too. 1 way or the other “they” the service provider will say well i is bisnes. So some1 got to give. And we as consumers get suck in with all this promotion of watching epl with starhub so called “the only league that’s matter” well so much of being a Singapore base company and not supporting the s-league!! And havung to watch champion league on mio… Wat do they think we are!! Fools tat to be taken in easily… like others enough is enough, they try to suck us dry well guess wat I’m not getting into all this anymore if the increase is 1 cent. Too much of so call competitive btween them and we pay the higher price. Wait til every body cancel the sports programs and we’ll see wat happen.

Football is no more passion nowadays it is played for money and its purely gambling . Not like those days when it was played for the love the game it was played with commitment and loyalty. To pay millions of dollars for a particular played who could produce talents lasting for few years is absurd. Today’s SOCCER never played with loyalty but for money I personally will not pay any extra to watch the game which was close to my heart

  • jaafar said:

it’S bloody nonsence, it’s about making money out off customers pocket since they (starhub and telco) know that we love soccer and number one sport in singapore. even country like indonesia and malasyia can offer much more cheaper price.

  • Sakushi said:

I will go online and watch live broadcast soccer match if they ever increase again (which they will for sure) because i find it unreasonable to keep increasing the price where we must understand how many people have the $$ to watch at home ? Not much to be honest.

Personally, i don’t buy their reasons.

  • Tiger said:

Starhub gave high costs as their reason to increase subscription fees on the football channel package when they were awarded BPL contract.

Now Singtel Mio TV have wrestled 2009/2010 UCL from ESPN/Starsports.
Fortunately I now work in Malaysia since Oct 2007 and get to watch both BPL and UCL matches on ESPN/Starsports channel when I subscribed to Astro. The matchday programmes are presented by John Dykes, Jason Dasey and the team as compared to the ever boring J. Morrison here.

With the current economic situation, I felt Starhub should review and reduce their sports package now as subscribers get to watch only BPL!

I totally 100% agreed with al of you soceer maniacs. The Telcos are sucking our hard earned money bone dry. Its better to watch at kopitiams, clubs and pubs with strangers and frens rather than paying the Telcos the unnecessary ‘increased’. Yo all soccer maniacs, let us us join hands and BOYCOTT the Telcos. Let them suffer. Without us, the customer, they are nothing. Only sports channel will make money for the Telcos. Let us united and stand together with these nonsense.

  • Torres said:

Why not contribute to the kopitiams and pubs rather than giving to those suckers sucking us every yr cause of the price hike. I am not gonna sign up for singtel for the champs league, they can go suck their own suckers. Cheers :)

  • Clarence Yeo said:

I think that the Telcos should reevaluate and considering if it is a wise decision to increse price for the screening of the BPL via SCV starhub or champions league via Singtel Mio TV.

Personally i feel that we as the consumers are paying lots more to watch our fav teams contesting in the tournament/league solely for the football channel alone much more expensive than the other channel.

Taken into consideration, consumers are working harder than before during this current economic downturn will they have the time to watch so many football league and tournament at one go and in the same day sacrificing their sleep and perform badly in their work routine.

one such day when consumer analyse that it doesnt benefit them in the longer term in terms of economic and health environment, they might give up watching football entirely. The FA themselves or FIFA knows that this is a money generating business oportunity and will not risk of meeting the finanical at the expense of strategic objective. As the world globalize never sleeps there are alternative means of watching the football match live i.e. via internet connection.

It is getting ridiculous really. If there’s another bidding and Singtel wins the EPL rights, I am going to kill myself. It’s a big headache for football fans who are not well off. Paying insane sums of money just to watch the Champions League and EPL is just not cool.

The two telcos should just come to an agreement or something. Singtel is trying to be ‘hip’ and draw customers when the CL only comes once every few months, so it’s nonsense to apply for MioTv as well.

I’ve watching football since it was black n white, then to color and now high definition.

Like what i always ask myself, would does it real mean to me what my favorite team becomes champion of this and champion of that? What do i get out of it?
Personally I don’t see any benefit at all beside common topic for conversation at cafe/coffee shop and to kill time or to keep conversation interesting and flowing…

Kept up wee hours to watch the live telecast..next morning, feel sleepy, utilities bill increased and job or business performance drop of slackened. Worst of all, time with family affected!

And my team became champion! What do I get out of it? I am always wondering!

Now,if many of us can do a reality and practicality life check then, watch it as entertainment and not addiction/compulsion. Then telco companies would not jump on the band wagon to bid for TV rights and load their cost on us and also load in their profit. Then CEOs of these telco company won’t be claiming big fat bonus from guiding company to high corporate growth!

If it is reasonable, subscribe and watch it, if it gets ridiculously high then watch it from public domain and support those cafe/coffee shop operator with pruchase of F&B. Then our intra economy will be slightly better.

Finally, do guess who is the major share-holder of telcos???????

So is there really a healthy competition or competing to monopolise then raise fee! Not uncommon to hear…MRT/bus fares going up by only a few cents, a few cent of few tens of cents is many %. Annual company reporting growth of %(how and from where?).Well done! Top management deserve bonus!

I am still scbscribing, i’ll stop if fee keep rising! Join me and send a srong message to telcos, stop taking subscribers as cash cows!

Any time they feel making more money, simple..raise fees! Know what Singapore will just grumble and pay. Put an end to it. Fee reasonable; watch. Fee rising, cut that channel and watch from coffee shop and give them business!

    Take a stand singaporean!

By rite- Starhub shld lower sports channel subscription since it cannot offer C.L matches! But siao hor – wait long long lah – we consumers suck thumb only. Why, cos its the only provider that offer EPL. Eg: if u wanna eat hokkien mee in food court – stall A sell 1 plate $3 with mee/sotong/prawns – Stall B same. Then fine 1 day Stall A decided take out prawns but still same $3 – presuming A/B tastes the same. Will most/all customers go to Stall B? No need to think rite.

BUT! in this secenario… we consumers do not have this choice! So L.L I chose to continue to use sports channel. Cos I still find the price ok for the EPL matches coverage. I tink u noe i noe lah why C.L go to Singtel MIO… “cannot say lah” – But to pay $$ for another box and wirings to watch C.L (that was in my own sports package) soli lor – I wun. MIO team still got the cheek to send promoters to do house sales calls haha – I straight jack-papaya tell the fella the programs sucks big time!!! Shiokers.

Back to Green camp! They shld by right fight to fight to keep C.L – dun care $$$ bid how high lah comeon – still make $$ lah – All wat forum letter of explaination for kids lah, kns. I bet my last dollar to see if another team come in to contest the EPL rights – see if they dare to bo-chap/act blur… – Simple – u take out EPL … all sports channel – cancel asap!!! My last words to green camp – bring back C.L soon…if up by a few bucks I dun mind.. but pls dont test our patience.

Singaporeans should really unite for once and show these telcos that they can’t just expect consumers to pay and pay. Just like SBS/SMRT, they are earning tons of profits. Heard too many complaints about it.

But now we will be paying the same monthly charges minus the European games from starhub.Let them come knocking with offers. Fans should work to bring down the price.

  • Ben said:

Enough is enough. By using the ‘reason’ of being more competitive between the 2 telcos, we the Fans ended up paying more and more for soccer…. To all fans out there, do not get conned on the ‘competitive’ pricing as you will only end up paying more. Not a smart choice…

I’ve abandoned watching live sports on cable long time ago since the first price hike of the Sports package due to EPL. Just like living costs, once go up they will want to stay up and perhaps even higher (even though subs was lowered, I’ve already lost my appetite).
Another price hike came as no surprise, whoever the seller is/will be.

The success of the sport particularly EPL imho has always been credited by hugely passionate and generous spectators and fans, something that is commendable but ironically did not and will not fit into the viewing pricing deal equation. Not talking about broadcaster alone, but also the agency who holds the selling right.
They have every right to decide the selling price as much as we have the right to decline to buy.

I’ll buy only if I think the price is right.

Guys, I am really not sure why everyone is still going on about either StarHub or SingTel Mio subscriptions here – Read my lips – just stream live matches LEGALLY over the Internet for FREE !!! The best way to protest is to do it silently – Just don’t subscribe to either !! Period ! If you don’t, and still get to enjoy watching live football for free, isn’t that the best of all worlds ?? And you punish the capitalistic, tyrannical cartel duo of StarHub and SingTel at the same time !

Over the last 2 nights, I plugged my laptop to my 42-inch LCD display and I had fullscreen (16:9), practically no jitter nor buffering, and watched the Chelsea, Man. City, Arsenal, Man. Utd. and Liverpool matches LIVE. And depending on which site you surf to, I had Sky Sports and Setanta Sports with full English commentary. The choice of sites and variety are astounding ! In fact, better than cable TV ! Heard of the “long tail” ? Well, you get “long tail” programming over the Internet, ie. many, many channels for free in any language commentary you want ! After the Liverpool match, I just switched to another site / player to watch the Tiger Woods and the PGA Championship live for free from 2 am till nearly 7 am this morning (pretty tired now… LOL) ! No hassles, just used my mouse to click a couple of times !

If you are already subscribing to a broadband Internet connection, then why bother to literally double subscribe to watch StarHub Cable or SingTel Mio ?? Why would you want to do that when you only pay ONCE for your Internet connection with an unlimited usage plan, and use it to surf the Internet AND also to watch live, streaming sports legally for free ?? Just ask yourself that simple question. I believe this should not even be a dilemma at all and the answer’s obvious… Right ?

  • john said:

Here I go, let me try again. A lot of people don’t like to watch live streaming programmes over the Internet because they previously have had bad experiences with jittery images, incessant buffering, etc… But what they also don’t know is that over the last 2 years, with the advent of much more advanced and sophisticated streaming technologies, the user experience can be as good as watching cable TV – with minimal jitter, buffering and resolutions close to DVD quality (720p). Moreover, most of the sites / players allow full screen viewing – example – I just plug my notebook to my 42-inch LCD TV and click on the full screen option form the site / player and wa la ! I get to watch the live matches full screen (16:9) on my bed in my bedroom !

Below are a list of the sites / players that I use often :
    * SopCast
    * TVU
    * TVAnts
    * PPStream
    * PPLive
    * SpVOD
    * PPMate
    * Veetle.com
    * Justin.tv (used to be very good, but now asks viewers to pay for “premium account” and I personally try to avoid it)
    * And literally hundreds more…!

I am not going to spoon-feed all of you with the URLs to the sites and where to download the players. Since you guys are on the Internet, you should be able to google using the keywords above and take it from there. Instructions from all of the sites are pretty straight forward. Happy viewing everyone !!

Hi John, Thanks so much for the info. You are definately not “spoon-feeding” us….you are helping all of us here to kick on the telcos’ ASS !!!! uhmm….could you provide more other hundreds options & recomendation of which web-site is the BEST viewed?…:-))
Gonna turn-off my StarHub and try view at the internet for 2nite’s MU Vs Burnely match. After which, i am gonna “send-off” the set-top box back to StarHub !
    Cheers John !!!!

  • john said:

John Doe, maybe it’s time to shift that TV to the bedroom… LOL

In fact, there’s life after linear programming-styled cable TV, which is pretty obsolescent. With live streaming over the Internet, I get to watch what I want and not what cable TV stations dictate to me what I want to watch ! A lot of people don’t realise, StarHub is paying so much money to Sky Sports for EPL is because they buy ALL the live matches in a “bundle”, ie. every single game that can be shown live over the entire season, regardless if it’s Man Utd., Liverpool, or if it’s Wolves, Wigan, etc… Which is why even teams like Wolves will get their share of 30 million pounds in broadcasting rights. Hence, consumers like us are actually paying for most matches that we don’t actually watch ! Especially when they all play at the same time at 10 pm on a Saturday night ! So why pay for matches that you don’t watch when you can watch what you want to watch over the Internet legally for free ??? This is the power of the Internet Web 2.0 economy. Singaporeans should start asking these hard questions instead of just blindly subscribing and paying their cable TV operators. Also, a lot of people don’t realise that this does not just apply to StarHub’s or SingTel’s sports “bundles”, but ALL their other programming “bundles” as well !

Will be watching the Man Utd. vs. Burnley match tonight as well via my fav. P2P site. Happy viewing !

  • john said:

CJ, you are more than welcome ! Will try to help as much as possible to get people weened off their so-called cable TV diet… In fact, if others can chime in with their fav. sites / players that’ll be good.

My personal favourite is SopCast, TVU, TVAnts, PPStream in that order. They are all sites with Webplayers. What I normally do is to find a P2P site that lists all the live programmes and the P2P site will point to the different Webplayers as listed above. The good news is that choices can be astounding ! You can get 30-40 links to just one live match with commentary in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, etc… Quality of viewing will be determined by the “bit rate” that the site is streaming a particular live video. Eg. if it’s streamed at 200Kbps, then you will get 200Kbps quality which is not very good. But if it is streamed at 800Kbps, then you will get almost DVD quality, but then you will also need to have a reasonably high bandwidth broadband connection at home(4-10Mbps). I have a 10Mbps cable connection at home.

My suggestion is that you Google to find your fav. P2P site that contains the links. Sometimes, a P2P site with links is easier to find the match you want to watch then to go to a particular Webplayer to look for the same live match.

One more thing I’d like to add – there are some rumours that if you are subscribers to SingTel and StarHub broadband Internet, they are maliciously and surreptiously attempting to “block” some of these P2P and Webplayer sites. I don’t know if this is true, but if so, then you should ALL vehemently complain to them to unblock !!! Why ? Only the Media Development Authority of Singapore or MDA can decide what sites are to be blocked, not the operators !! All sites stipulated by MDA and are currently blocked (or are attempted to be blocked) are ponographic, racial / religious hate sites, and other extremely controversial sites. Please note that live streaming sports sites are NOT controversial (is YouTube controversial ??), and is NOT stipulated by MDA to be blocked by Internet operators !! So, if you consistently can’t get onto a live streaming site and others can, you should call your Internet provider and ask them why you can’t access that site ! For me, I just use M1 cable broadband (even though they are riding on StarHub’s cable infrastructure). Why ? Because M1 doesn’t have any vested interest in cable TV, unlike StarHub Cable TV and SingTel Mio, so I get to watch in peace… LOL

    Hey both john(s),

Very soon,I will be divorcing my “wife” which is currently Starhub!!!
StarHub is my “wife” becos I spent more time sleeping with it whilst watching EPL more than sleeping with my real wife!…OOps!
Nevermind, got great recommendations from John about getting my next “new wife” from the net !!!
    Cheers!
ps: maybe need to buy a “chiong-type” set-top box to watch EPL coz my broadband internet is also by StarHub…

Hey CJ, the idea’s not to have unsightly set-top boxes ! If you have an Internet connection at home, then you’ll probably already have some modem or hardware. So, unless you like additional cumbersome electronic equipment like set-top boxes as part of your interior decor., then isn’t it much better if you just have your Internet modem and everything else is software-based on your PC / laptop ?? Also, one of the advantages of watching live streaming programmes is that you can do that seamlessly anywhere in the world as long as you have access to a stable broadband connection. Try taking your StarHub Cable TV or SingTel Mio set-top box with you on vacation !!! LOL

Anyway, don’t get me wrong, I’m certainly not promoting M1. If your Internet provider, StarHub, is treating you well, then just stay with them. As far as I’m concerned, a stable and reliable broadband connection is a stable and reliable broadband connection, I don’t see other value propositions. BUT if they try to be “funny”, then that is a different story… There are 2 primary reasons why I selected M1 as my ISP : (1) Personally, I don’t trust either StarHub and SingTel by virtue of the reasons in my earlier post, rumour or not. (2) At the time of selecting my broadband connection, M1 offered me a 6-month plan as opposed to the normal 2-year plans. This was very attractive to me as I certainly didn’t want to be tied down to any provider for 2 years if I could help it ! If M1 didn’t treat me well in that period, then I only need to “tahan” them for 6 months and then change ISPs !
    - these are the only personal reasons, you may have different reasons for using StarHub or SingTel and they are valid for you. In essence, it doesn’t really matter, as long we are not held to ransom by StarHub Cable TV and SingTel Mio !
