Presidential aspirant Senator Manuel Roxas II gives way to Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

Saying he believed in “country above self,” Roxas stressed he would be supporting Aquino in the 2010 elections although it was not immediately clear whether Aquino would seek the presidency.

“Today, I’m announcing my support for the candidacy of Noynoy Aquino for president for 2010,” Roxas said in a televised press conference at the Club Filipino in San Juan, Metro Manila.

“Sa madaling salita, Noynoy has made it clear to me he wants to carry the torch of leadership,” he added.

However, Aquino, who was also at the press conference, did not deliver a speech.

Roxas said that after several talks with Aquino, they came up with a decision that would help them pursue their “common dream” for change.

“Ito na ang pinakamabigat na desisyon sa buhay ko [This is the biggest decision I've made in my life],” said Roxas who already released several political advertisements ahead of the 2010 polls. He is also set to marry broadcaster Korina Sanchez in October.

“I do this for unity in support for change…if that means somebody has to make a sacrifice, ako na,” he said.

The senator’s late father, former Senator Gerry Roxas, was a close friend and political ally of Aquino’s assassinated father, former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. The older Roxas and Aquino almost went against each other for the 1972 presidential elections, which did not push through when then president Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law.

A pathetic decision. Once again Filipinos decide to choose their leaders through sentimentality over brains. Noynoy is nothing but a shadow of his father and a slight improvement from her mother. Are we idiots? we keep on preaching against family dynasties and here we have Noynoy the champion of the Chinese Mestizo Cojuanco Plan.

Forget the Aquinos, while they might be attributed to restoration of democracy, we still got left behind in terms of Progress. Cory Aquino was a hypocrite, remember the Hacienda Luisita and why it got excempted from the Agrarian Reform Law

I would have voted for mar, he is an economist whose works are noted in pro economy and productivity laws. His works are actually quoted in world bank publications about the Philippines.

Let’s not forget that they (aquino and roxas) already had a closed door meeting – meaning all things are finalized and agreed upon. I’m just wondering why aquino has nothing to say about roxas’ speech. I think this is just one of their dramas. Maybe, they want to check the mass’ reaction re: this big switch. Should they get a negative response, then the switch will not push through. O baka naman ginawa nila ‘to para lumapad pa ang appeal ni Roxas for “giving way” to aquino. it appears kasi (ngaun)na mas madadala ni aquino yung partido kesa kay roxas, kaya mas bini-build up ngaun si roxas. Mainit kasi ang pangalan ni aquino ngaun and it is not good na ma-outshine ng vice-presidentiable ang kapartido nyang presidentiable. i’ll just make a forecast that aquino will also give way to roxas which will give more pogi-points to aquino. win-win situation ang result ng drama. whatever man ang susunod na kabanata, i really believe that it’ll be roxas-aquino tandem in the end and not the other way around.

    Change

God in His mysterious ways has given the Filipino nation one more chance to redeem itself from the morass of political decadence and divisiveness. To heal the cracks He again intervened and bring to the fore a reluctant candidate in the person of Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino. In the process He made Mar Roxas the greatest statesman of his generation. Mar has also demonstrated his capacity to subordinate his personal ambition to give significance and meaning to the clarion call for CHANGE.
Noynoy’s entry into the presidential arena and Roxas supreme sacrifice provided an answer to the nation’s predicament over who among the traditional and emerging leaders can effect and carry on with the necessary changes that this country badly needed. Ours is not a copycat of US President Obama’s battle cry when he was in the campaign trail. If there is any similarity at all, it is only in the intensity of the people’s yearning for a leader that is made of sterner stuff who can carryout that change. The Americans have their own reasons for Change. The Filipinos want to end the era of corruption, moral decadence and divisiveness fanned by politicians who have mastered the art of character assassination in aid of their election.

Noynoy has the genes of Ninoy and of her mother Cory. He cannot evade that and it is good. I have seen the equanimity of Noynoy during the wake of President Cory. While some political figures who unabashedly identified themselves with the Aquino couple were showing contempt at their perceived political foes with an air of derision, Noynoy dignifiedly received them with no hint of disdain. In fact he reached out to them prompting the cynics to say that such gesture was the first act of reconciliation. In the aftermath, the Marcos children promised their support for Noynoy. To the political analysts that means delivery of the ‘solid north’ for Noynoy the candidate.

Personally, Noynoy’s eventual candidacy will end the quest for a man who can unite and rally the nation in overhauling a system that is so debilitated by the magma of corruption. The change we are talking about here is like a paradigm shift given the tentacles of corruptive influences that refuse to leave the corridors of power and the halls of congress by surreptitiously crafting a move for charter change by way of constitutional assembly.

But this development does not mean Noynoy will not have an adversary. God will not want that. What is certain now is that the choice will now be narrowed down to a few. In my case I have now narrowed mine to one.

mar roxas’ decision was really shocking.
since he has already spent millions in his ads,
i really thought that he would run for president.
his decision to support noynoy, IN MY OPINION,
was just another way to advertise himself…
by saying that he had to “sacrifice… for unity in support for change”, he would be able to win the people’s hearts.
this would increase his chance of winning if he runs for vice president.
furthermore, he decided to give up the presidency for noynoy
since he knew that noynoy has a higher chance of winning than him.
(noynoy is just riding with his parents’ popularity.
and since cory just died recently, the people’s sympathy and
    support is directed towards noynoy)

The presidency is a very vital position in any country. Most of the successful and effective presidents are those who really prepared for it in terms education, character, experience/track record, upbringing, involvement in many sectors of society, seasoning in decision making process, and a likeable personality. Some are born with charismatic quality and leadership from the grade school up to college/graduate school. I sincerely hope, our country can find that person among the many aspirants! Mar Roxas, to me, is an ideal candidate. His latest gesture is a reflection of his character as a man. God bless you, Mar!

I salute you Mar for having sacrificed your personal ambition for the sake of our country. You are the kind of man this country needs unlike the other tradpols that abandoned party principles for the sake of personal aggrandizement. Had you done otherwise, you would have created a third divide. But you chose the right option. For us ordinary people, we appreciate your noble gesture. You have strengthened my conviction that after all, it is now high time that your group takes on the country’s leadership, sans of course the renegades, so that this country may be given a chance of a better future.

I am not a part of your group but I really hate turncoats who lack both in principle and self-worth. These kinds of people destroy the moral fabric of Filipinos by setting bad examples like rotten eggs that smell like hell but talk like angels. It is good that they abandoned your ship because their backs are full of sinful loads that may have caused your ship to sink down the ocean deep.

I have a strong belief that Noynoy can rally the Filipinos towards a better Philippines. He is an epitome of his father – Ninoy Aquino – who also sacrificed his own life so that the Filipinos can savor freedom once again.

I am one of the toiling masses who work hard for every cent that is put in our pocket. I do not belong to the others who rake in Billions without even shedding an ounce of sweat. And the guts to play golf while waiting for the people’s money to be delivered to them in a silver platter!

How is it that Mar is giving way to Noynoy Aquino after “Noynoy has made it clear to me he wants to carry the torch of leadership”, Mar says, and yet Noynoy has not yet made up his mind today about running for President? It was reported that Noynoy needs a spiritual retreat. They need to get their act together. What happened today does not speak well of Mar and Nonoy’s capability to lead and be in control.

Such an admiring act of Mar Roxas to give way, sacrificing at the expense of his personal ambition, for what he thinks is best for his party and the country, a country in dire need for a genuine reform and the Filipinos seeing hope in the person of Noynoy, clamoring him now to run for President in 2010. I salute you Mar Roxas coz you are a true politician, a politician looking at the interest of others. I hope other ambitious politicians will emulate such a great character.

Now that Mar Roxas gives way for Noynoy, I hope Erap will also follow. In my opinion, Erap, instead of going around places and declaring that he will run if opposition will not unite, should better utilize his charm and experience in politics to negotiate and convince other opposition people to support and rally behind one person. And I believe it is Noynoy. Noynoy may not be ripe for others but he is a man most credible among those aspiring presidentiables.

The only way to achieve unity is to sacrifice. To sacrifice is a virtue.

My admiration to Mar’s declined for the presidency doesn’t mean to favor Nonoy to the position. It is right that Cory is a hypocrite for exempting their huge land ownership as subject from Agrarian Reform Law. How can Nonoy run an honest and non-corrupt government if they (AQUINOS) can’t even give what is due for their tenants at “Hacienda Luisita”. Although, let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. I was totally surprised by Mar Roxas decision to give way. I admire his courage for the tough decision he has made. On a personal point of view, as the saying say’s “Di Pa Hinog” which i refer to Sen. Noynoy Aquino, We all know that he is a son of our two past great Leaders, but come on, there’s a lot of things that he needs to prove to the people before running for 2010 Presidency. Lets be honest to ourself, Its Mar Roxas who carries the complete package to run as a president. By the way, I am a 100% Tarlaqueno I would love to see another Tarlaqueno on the Palace. But I believe that Mar Roxas can deliver more for the people.

Get your facts straight, elections were always on odd year. It was supposed to be held Nov. 1973. National Convention for both parties, sometime around May-June of ‘73.

LP strongest Bet was Roxas, Salonga I don’t know if Aquino will qualify under the constitution of that time but he was definitely popular.

If it was 40 or 45 years of age for president, I forget. As it was always an issue Marcos used against Aquino, ‘67 when he run for senator and contemplating on the presidency. 45 years old, Aquino will qualify.

However con-con which was drafting the new constitution was on-going since 70. But martial law dished all hopes of a presidential election ever since. The new constitution was ratified in Jan.’73. Started pre-martial law ratified during martial law.

What Roxas did is an exact example of what a STATESMAN is. The country needs people like him. The opposition can get lessons from his sublime sacrifice. They must put their acts together and unify – fielding only candidates who possess the true character of being a statesman, whose motive is love for country rather than self vested, selfish and personal interests and reasons.

I believe THEY ALL possess qualifications but they can contribute their greatness by remaining investors and good business men/women.

We are a people worth dying for, let us ensure that we deserve the sacrifices of the great people in our past.

  • max cordero said:

Mar chose the road less travelled. a supreme act of statemanship which will be the best optin for our country. if ever, noynoy will have the best team mate with him as vice president.

as they both came from good ancestral stock, we can have a better chance of finding more democratic, humane, responsive, transparent and acountable governance.

if elected into office, as we will vote them into office, we must not leave them alone but rather work with them each step of the way. their being young and raw, as some quarters say,is not a hindrance to their assumption into office. the threat and the danger for us as a nation, lurks more from those who say they are seasoned and experienced to handle the task of nation building.

    Mabuhay ka Mar Roxas

We thank you Mar Roxas for making a sacrifice for our country in supporting the presidential candidacy of Noynoy Aquino. I salute your statesmanship in letting the interest of the nation over the personal one. We need more people like you. Your make me proud to be a Filipino.

God bless you Mar and God bless our Noynoy for 2010, Mabuhay ang pambansang demokrasya, Sagipin ang Sierra Madre.

It took a selfless Aquino to remove an authoritarian government during Marcos martial law time.

I really admired Mar’s courage. Seldom could we find politicians with such attitude and outlook of the future of this country – trully unselfish! But if I were to decide, I would say Mar Roxas for president, Chiz Escudero for VP and Noynoy for one of the many senators.

I think this is just a strategy of Roxas to attract people’s attention or hearts. Besides, Noynoy did not yet clearly declared to run for presidency this coming 2010. What if Noynoy did not run? The possibility is that Roxas will absorb Noynoy’s supporter after.I’m not against Roxas or anybody, but I want to have the benefit of doubt that this is might be a possible case.

Let’s hope that Mar Roxas said it with utmost sincerity! First of all, we really, really need to pray very hard if we want change in our country, secondly change has to start within ourselves. Am saddened by the decision of Senator Roxas to abdicate in favor of a neophyte who commits several political blunders everytime he opens his mouth to speak: “Hindi ko sya papansinin kung pupunta si Presidente dito sa libing”. When she arrived, he did welcome her. Impulsive? I think so… this country is in a quagmire because we entrust leadership to people who are not leaders…. leadership is a quality that is honed by years of experience and training… this is not a monarchy where power is given to the heir…. we abhored dynasty because of its evil effects on our society and yet here we are endorsing the son of an oligarch…. GODBLESS THE PHILIPPINES…. I just pray that we will not be at the bottom among Asia’s economy… Vietnam already surpassed us….soon, Laos and Cambodia???? let us think clearly…. Roxas is a trained economist… alam mo ba kung ano ang educational background ni Sen Aquino??? honesty alone will not bring us to progress

  • jobert said:

whether noynoy or mar runs, there’s not difference, for me either of them doesn’t qualify to be a president. they are politicians, even if noynoy is the son of the late cory aquino we’re not sure that he will be like his parents. we need a leader who is God fearing and a clear conscience. like the late George Washington said “it is impossible to govern a nation without God and the Bible”. there is only one presidentiable with this qualities, sino pa “EDDIE” ito, “EDDIE VILLANUEVA”.

I SALUTE SEN. MAR ROXAS for his decision.
    Napaiyak ako watching his announcement.

Mar tumakbo as VP.
what a destiny really for Sen. Roxas. It is HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF in his and Noynoy’s time. During his father’s time, Sen. Ninoy overtook his father’s fame but no election happened. and perhaps, this is the realization of that supposed NOMINATION OF Sen. Ninoy to be the standard bearer of Liberal Party to challenge Pres. Marcos…this time it will be Pres. Arroyo’s nominee.

    Hi,
I am a foriegner, sidelined (cannot vote) watching and expecting and hoping that politics will change in the Philippines during our lifetime. As usual now, the Philippines politics is so corrupt down to the core. The present politicians are making a big business out of our corrupt government (look at our ZTE deal, & etc., & etc.,). I have never met a poor a Pilipino politician. It is so shameful to other nations of what we are doing. I hope that with Noynoy Aquino as President of the Philippines, these things will change for the better. If Mar Roxas will be his candidate as a Vice-President, they are winnable candidates, in the face of the Pilipino people.

A nation can only be as great as her people could make her, but definitely it needs a good leader, someone like Mar Roxas.
last summer i have worked with someone who is affiliated to Mar Roxas and the project was a job booth camp wherein they give training to newly grad. This activity is a laudable attempt to prepare graduates in the future job market so i saw with my own eyes his existing programs for youth sector. He is the only politician with no issue on corruption. so i was saddened by this news.

For that decision, I salute you Mar Roxas since it will be useless if you run and Villar will win then. It will lose your tandem with the LP group and loyalists. Moreover, Noy2 now has the timing. The Filipino people will give him the chance because of the legacy of his parents and crediting also his potentials as public servant. I believe that it make you party strong against with other group who dream for change. In my opinion, your decision, admires you of being gentleman who see the synergistic effect of teamwork and timing among LP. In my view, your timing will be on 2016. Besides, you are set to get married this year.It will give ample time for your starting family and prepare your next upcoming election. As i see it, you will be prepared to be be public servant and family man. As the projected result of mind, you will be in timing then, have more blessing to your constituents and to your party.

Wow! At last granted ang wish ko. Noynoy for president and Mar for vice president tandem. Promise ko sa sarili ko if ever Mar will give up to run for president, vice president instead, I will go to comelec to have me registered for me to vote this coming election that if Noynoy will confirm his decision. I’ts been a long time that I did not register as a voter due to corrupt candidates. Mabuhay kayo.

Super Galing naman ni Sen. Mar!!! WOW!!!
Mas gusto ko sana si Sen. Mar for President and Sen. Noynoy for VP…but whatever is their decision, sila naman ang mas nakakaalam kung ano at sino ang dapat for our country. Ang importante is their tandem.

Oh my God! I don’t believe Noynoy could win the presidency. namatay lang c cory, tatakbo na agad sya out of nowhere. walang deklarasyon ng martial law. hindi people power ito. hindi sya kilala sa karamihan. wala naman syang nagawa sa bayan. Better give it to the great gentleman Senator Mar Roxas. Mas maganda ang chances of winning with Mar. We love you Mar Roxas!!!

This is the best news about politics i’ve ever heared for a long time. I’ve always doubted Sen. Mar Roxas’ political interest but now he shows how to be truly noble and humble. By being humble he becomes great, for truly it’s not the position that makes a man great but by what he did for his country. I now believe you can be a good leader of our country in the future. With unity, good will always triumph over evil no matter how hopeless the situation is…

An aplaused for MAR ROXAS decisions to give way to NOYNOY for a possible candidacy for next year presidential elections. An indeed man of wishing a greater country rather than a greater self. I hope this sacrificed is well, worth it – I mean result oriented.

    THUMBS UP! for MAR!

    FIGHT! FIGHT! noYNoy ^_^
