Presidential aspirant Senator Manuel Roxas II gives way to Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
Saying he believed in “country above self,” Roxas stressed he would be supporting Aquino in the 2010 elections although it was not immediately clear whether Aquino would seek the presidency.
“Today, I’m announcing my support for the candidacy of Noynoy Aquino for president for 2010,” Roxas said in a televised press conference at the Club Filipino in San Juan, Metro Manila.
“Sa madaling salita, Noynoy has made it clear to me he wants to carry the torch of leadership,” he added.
However, Aquino, who was also at the press conference, did not deliver a speech.
Roxas said that after several talks with Aquino, they came up with a decision that would help them pursue their “common dream” for change.
“Ito na ang pinakamabigat na desisyon sa buhay ko [This is the biggest decision I've made in my life],” said Roxas who already released several political advertisements ahead of the 2010 polls. He is also set to marry broadcaster Korina Sanchez in October.
“I do this for unity in support for change…if that means somebody has to make a sacrifice, ako na,” he said.
The senator’s late father, former Senator Gerry Roxas, was a close friend and political ally of Aquino’s assassinated father, former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. The older Roxas and Aquino almost went against each other for the 1972 presidential elections, which did not push through when then president Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law.

the best decision i’ve ever heard from a politician, althogh I know it’s not certain until it’s over and done, for it’s always a practice to a philippine politicians to say a controversial announcement just to make publicity, ifever his decision is from his heart, then, our country is in the real good path of recovery, and I hope Noynoy will become a ral duplicate of his Father, and I believe, he is him.

I used to always hear “never trust anything that comes out of a politicians mouth”. They are all the same, who will say and do anything to be the peoples’ choice. eventhough the Filipino people showed their love and support to the Aquino family during Pres. Let’s not forget that they (aquino and roxas) already had a closed door meeting – meaning all things are finalized and agreed upon. I’m just wondering why aquino has nothing to say about roxas’ speech. I think this is just one of their dramas. Maybe, they want to check the mass’ reaction re: this big switch. Should they get a negative response, then the switch will not push through. O baka naman ginawa nila ‘to para lumapad pa ang appeal ni Roxas for “giving way” to aquino. it appears kasi (ngaun)na mas madadala ni aquino yung partido kesa kay roxas, kaya mas bini-build up ngaun si roxas. God in His mysterious ways has given the Filipino nation one more chance to redeem itself from the morass of political decadence and divisiveness. To heal the cracks He again intervened and bring to the fore a reluctant candidate in the person of Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino. In the process He made Mar Roxas the greatest statesman of his generation. Mar has also demonstrated his capacity to subordinate his personal ambition to give significance and meaning to the clarion call for CHANGE.
Noynoy’s entry into the presidential arena and Roxas supreme sacrifice provided an answer to the nation’s predicament over who among the traditional and emerging leaders can effect and carry on with the necessary changes that this country badly needed. Ours is not a copycat of US President Obama’s battle cry when he was in the campaign trail. If there is any similarity at all, it is only in the intensity of the people’s yearning for a leader that is made of sterner stuff who can carryout that change. The Americans have their own reasons for Change. The Filipinos want to end the era of corruption, moral decadence and divisiveness fanned by politicians who have mastered the art of character assassination in aid of their election.
Noynoy has the genes of Ninoy and of her mother Cory. He cannot evade that and it is good. I have seen the equanimity of Noynoy during the wake of President Cory. While some political figures who unabashedly identified themselves with the Aquino couple were showing contempt at their perceived political foes with an air of derision, Noynoy dignifiedly received them with no hint of disdain. In fact he reached out to them prompting the cynics to say that such gesture was the first act of reconciliation. In the aftermath, the Marcos children promised their support for Noynoy. To the political analysts that means delivery of the ‘solid north’ for Noynoy the candidate.
Personally, Noynoy’s eventual candidacy will end the quest for a man who can unite and rally the nation in overhauling a system that is so debilitated by the magma of corruption. The change we are talking about here is like a paradigm shift given the tentacles of corruptive influences that refuse to leave the corridors of power and the halls of congress by surreptitiously crafting a move for charter change by way of constitutional assembly.
But this development does not mean Noynoy will not have an adversary. God will not want that. What is certain now is that the choice will now be narrowed down to a few. In my case I have now narrowed mine to one.

Mar Roxas’ decision is a big leap in philippine politics…there are still honorable men like him in a pack of wolves (politicians)..saludo kami sa iyo. but, let’s not put our guards down…let all those who believe we can have a change for the better stand up and be counted in the fight against moral decay and corruption in government…let’s vote for decent and competent leaders..

I could hardly believe with mar’s decision but it’s greatly admirable if he really meant it…that’s too big a sacrifice. if he is true to it, then surely he reap his reward later…not only for our country… so be it, God bless you Sen. Mar Roxas and praying for the real discernment for Noy2.
finally!!.. someone has the balls to set aside his ambition for the greater good of the people. im a 30 year old man.. but after seeing the news tonight re: sen mar roxas’ decision of giving way to sen. noynoy aquino’s bid for presidency i almost cried.. i had chills on my nape.. and thought finally… someones stepping up. i believe its a huge decision on his part and i have outmost respect for him. i used to hate him for his political ad campaigns.. i believe its outright shameful. but after the news tonight my thoughts of him changed. i didnt vote last election coz i didnt find any reason to. maybe next year i will. and one thing for sure.. aquino and roxas will be first on my list. there’s hope people

1. Probably having second thoughts running for presidency.. From surveys, he is far behind Villar…
2. Nonoy only carries the name of his parents.. Had he not been the son of his parents, will those people “believe” in him the way they do now? I doubt it..
3. I will not vote for someone who runs for president because other people told him so.. I want the decision and faith to come from his own.. Because if its the former, who then is to blame when everything fails?
this is very astonishing considering all the efforts done by sen. roxas to be the chief executive…he still, with humility, gave way to sen. aquino just to prove their respect and love for the country.

hmmmm……pasensya na po mga kabayan, pero frankly speaking, i’ved never seen much establishments built for the people after Marcos Era. Some of Marcos accomplishments are tertiary hospitals like Heart Center of the Phils, Lung Center, Kidney Center, LRT…etc…Buti pa noon eh me lima singkong cherryball, mga pinoy ay madaling nakapunta ng Hawaii to work there. Eh ngayon ang hirap hirap na makaabroad, paano kasi ang gobyerno natin ay nagrerequire ng fee kuno for this and that fm the employer kada OFW na hindi naman napupunta sa mismong OFW or family member ng OFW. Noon ay di rin tayo nalalayo sa bansang Japan. Gobyerno is like a big crocodile,trying to have a piece of cake sa pinagpapaguran ng isang Pilipino para sa kanyang pamilya (Ex. Juday tax evasion case kuno, pinagpaguran ng tao yung kinita niya nohhhh).
In Fairness kay Noynoy & Mar, WISH LANG NAMING MGA PILIPINO na sana ay mabago ang sistema. Government system should be FOR THE PEOPLE, TO THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE!!!!

I welcome Mar’s decision to give way to Noynoy. A true politician indeed. Let’s just hope that Noynoy would now declare his intentions to run for the presidency. And hoping also that change will come during his term, as what every Filipino has been wishing for.

The presidency is a very vital position in any country. Most of the successful and effective presidents are those who really prepared for it in terms education, character, experience/track record, upbringing, involvement in many sectors of society, seasoning in decision making process, and a likeable personality. Some are born with charismatic quality and leadership from the grade school up to college/graduate school. I sincerely hope, our country can find that person among the many aspirants! Mar Roxas, to me, is an ideal candidate. His latest gesture is a reflection of his character as a man. God bless you, Mar!
i can’t believe it… as in o-m-g… i’m not yet sure with mr. aquino,, because i think people are just overwhelmed by the past events that has transpired… but i’m not saying that mr. aquino will not be a potential presidentiable… just that,, i doubt the circumstances… but for mr. roxas,, it was really a big surprise… but i respect his decision… and because of that,, i believe he made each of us proud… he is a true living example that good politicians are still around… that’s why we are still blessed… hhaaayyy… lucky us…
